Dear Parents and Students,
We have had a fabulous end to our 2021-22 academic year! The last week of term we focused our attention on 'Wellbeing' in our community. Next year in addition to the curriculum changes, our focus will be very much on rebuilding our community and focusing on wellbeing until it becomes integral and woven into the fabric of our school.
Wellbeing is more than simply feeling good. It is a state of mind and one which must be shared by the whole community. Rather than focusing on shortcomings, annoyances, irritations, we flip this and look for all that is positive. There where we have issues we look to resolve them by sharing our ideas, being open to constructive criticism, growing in maturity and sharing all the 'wins' within our community.
We have lively and friendly students and a wonderful and supportive parental community, now that our campuses have opened up we look forward to welcoming you into school.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you on the 31st August 2022!
Kind regards,
Natalia Ambridge
PTA Bake Sale
A big thank you to our lovely parent volunteers and PTA for coordinating a successful Bake Sale! The children so enjoyed purchasing treats and seeing parents on campus. We look forward to many more parent events in the new academic year!
City Campus Show
A warm congratulations to the City Campus students for their outstanding school-wide performance. Well done to all!
Wellness Week
The BISI Primary School enjoyed participating in a variety of exciting activities during Wellness Week! From dancing to yoga, sports to journaling, the children took time to reflect upon the role well being plays in their lives. Many thanks to our Heads of Pastoral Lynne Jenkins and Carolyn Güven for coordinating such a fun week for all.
EYFS
On the Move in EYFS by Ms. Katrine
In Butterfly Class, we have been working on our new topic 'On the Move'. The students have been learning all about cars, buses and other types of transport. One of our main focuses has been road safety, and the students learnt all about traffic rules and how they help us stay safe. The students made their own traffic lights and took part in a role play activity where they practiced crossing the road safely.
City ESL by Mrs. Güven
City ESL students were joined by the rest of EYFS 2 for a treasure hunt. We dressed for the hunt, learnt a chant, braved the dangerous stairs, swam round a pink sea monster and crawled past a family of bears to find the treasure and share it out.
Our youngest learners were excited to celebrate their accomplishments with our end of the year awards ceremony!
Year One
Y1 Students have been enjoying learning about plants and spending time exploring nature in the Botanical Garden. Here, students from Ms. Reed's class proudly show off pumpkin seeds that they planted.
June in Y1 by Ms. Lorenz
In Literacy, we started learning a new story. We made puppets to help us tell the story in groups!
In Maths, we began investigating money. We looked at various coins from around the world. We made coin rubbings and tried to determine the value.
In Design Technology, we designed our own smoothies. We wrote instructions for how to make a smoothie. We then cut our ingredients and used the blender to make our smoothies! We had lots of variety in flavours! They tasted so yummy!
In Science, we learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees. We went to Yildiz Park and walked on the canopy tree walk to observe the differences between the two types of trees.
In History, we learnt about timelines. We made our own timelines about significant events in our lives! It was interesting to see how different we all looked when we were babies and toddlers. Boy have we grown!
Y1 International Students enjoyed a family picnic in the Botanical Garden to celebrate the end of the year. Thank you to the Y1 parents for their time and efforts in making the event so special for the children.
Year Two
Y2 Trip by Mr. Murray
2M travelled back in time to May 1453 and imagined we were part of the Siege of Constantinople. First, we explored the 1453 Panorama Museum and found answers to our scavenger hunt. Then we enjoyed a delicious lunch before meeting up with our friends from Zekeriyakoy for a tour of the city walls. As you can see, we had quite the adventure!
Students were proud to be recognised for their accomplishments and receive a certificate of achievement from their teachers during our end of the year Awards Ceremony!
Our Y2 International Students enjoyed a hike and party in the forest to celebrate the en of the year. A warm thank you to our wonderful Y2 parents for their time and generosity in making this event such fun!
Y1 & Y2 Students from Gardening Club led by Ms. Neslihan and Ms. Eda harvested and tasted the strawberries they grew. Yum!
Year Three
The Year 3/4 Choir by Ms. Newman
The year 3/4 choir has been a great success since its foundation at the beginning of term 3. There are 15 members, a mix of boys and girls from both year groups, who have enthusiastically learnt new songs and improved their singing technique during our weekly rehearsals after school on Mondays. They improved their posture, tonation, articulation and expression by singing a variety of songs. Our repertoire included a range of styles including the following songs:
Lickety Split - a call and response rap to improve clear consonant pronunciation and changes in tempo and volume
Hoi Mache Peter - a simple song with missing words in each round, to hear our silent singing voice
Throw Catch - a South African Xhosa song incorporating syncopated rhythms and movement, sung acapella (without accompaniment)
Changing Channels - a comical song to improve singing with our ‘head voice’ (high notes) and expression
Three Little Birds - The Bob Marley feel-good reggae classic from 1980, along with actions
Love as our Guide - the ‘Sing Up’ song 2022 which we will sing with choirs around the world
We sang in a variety of settings from the classroom to the theatre, to experience a range of acoustics. To end the year, they performed beautifully on stage in the theatre, on Wednesday 22nd June, for their classmates and then for their visiting parents, who were so proud of their performance.
You can watch and listen to all of our performances on Flipgrid here: https://flipgrid.com/+sr3rmdgs
And our performance presentation can be viewed here: https://prezi.com/view/nDiv3R8MTuQR60stun5Y/
The benefits of singing in a choir are endless – musical, vocal, social, health and wellbeing, all of which were evident as the children ended every rehearsal with a huge smile on their face, eager to practise the songs again at home. I am so proud of the progress they have made in our 8 weeks of singing together after school; they have really made the most of this musical opportunity. I will be launching a ‘Key Stage 2 Choir’ in September which will be open to all students in years 3-6 who enjoy singing - look out for the after school club sign up sheet in the new academic year to take part!
Y3 Classes during the Awards Ceremony.
Y3 Science by Ms. Bibi
3B students showed off their learning on flowering plants in Science by recording the first videos for 3BTV, a channel where botany enthusiasts can learn all about plants! Through news reports, experts shared the results of their investigations into what plants need to grow well and gave the audience useful plant care tips.
Year Four
Y4 National School Graduation Ceremony
Our community joyously celebrated the graduation of our Y4 National Students this past week. We wish them well in the next academic year as they officially begin middle school.
Year 4 Trips by Ms. Newman
It has been fantastic resuming field trips at the end of the year, after 2 years of the pandemic. Year 4 enjoyed attending the cross country run in the Belgrade forest as well as geography trip to Sariyer and Andolu Kavagi plus an end of year adventure trip to Forest Kemerburgaz.
On Thursday 26th May 2022, 4N and 4L visited Sariyer and took a ferry to Andolu Kavagi on the Asian side. They collected a variety of data including photographs, maps and numerical data to describe the places in more detail, including the main similarities and differences. They were able to identify human (man-made) and physical (natural) features. Looking at the third Bosphorus bridge, they could discuss how human impact can be both good and bad at the same time, by considering the bridge’s impact on city traffic and the environment. Children’s highlights of the day included the ferry boat ride, playing on the playground in Sariyer, seeing dozens of dolphins, a shared picnic at the top of the hill near the castle and buying an ice cream.
On Thursday 9th June 2022 all four year 4 classes visited Forest Kemerburgaz to take part in a range of exciting high rope climbing activities. This enabled children to develop physical flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance by taking part in outdoor and adventurous activities. It taught them how regular outdoor exercise benefits mental and physical health as well as the importance of positive friendships and making new friends. It was great to have the opportunity for Etiler, Zekeriyakoy and National classes to come together to enjoy this exciting adventure in the forest. The children were so excited to wear harnesses and climb up high up in the trees to complete different balancing trails.
We are excited to take part in more fun and educational field trips in the next academic year.
Y4 Students proudly hold their certificates.
Y4 Students enjoy playing board games during Wellness Week with Ms. Merve!
Year Five
Year 5 Trip by Ms. Lloyd
Year 5L, 5F and 5N spent the day in the Atatürk Kent Ormanı.
We all had fun playing on the adventure playground testing our teamwork skills and then exercised our hand and eye coordination with the parachute in the park. The best game was called ‘popcorn’ which involved ‘popping’ soft balls off the parachute!! What fun! We ended the field-trip with a relaxing sit down and an ice cream back at school.
Y5 Students were very proud to receive their awards. Well done to all!
National Year 5&6 students had a trip to Yelken Publishing. The students worked hard throughout the year for their Turkish Creative Reading and Writing lesson. They have published their own portfolios and explored what it means to be a publisher in the company. They had great fun!
