IDEA in Primary
We have been exploring identity during the month of January in IDEA. Identity is like a puzzle: it is the pieces of who we are. We can think of our home country, country of residence, family, friends, faith and beliefs, culture, gender, language, traditions, physical appearance, hobbies, likes and dislikes, foods, and places that we enjoy spending time when we describe identity. The special thing about identity is that it is unique: no two identites are the same. Primary students reflected on their own identities and created beautiful handprints to represent the peices of who they are.
EYFS
Miss Elise: Preschool 1
This term we are exploring the topic Starry Night. We kicked off with constellations, differentiating a star from a moon as well as the daytime features from the night's. We also learnt night routines thus wearing our pyjamas and reading bedtime stories. We spent time singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and other lullabies. We also used torches and encouraged the children to shine them at objects they saw around. We were so thankful for sunny days that allowed us to have our outdoor activities such as a walk in the garden, counting birds in the sky and feeling the beautiful breeze. We can now identify nocturnal animals thanks to the safari night sounds and we enjoyed playing the musical chairs to get along familiar instrumental sounds.
Miss Ogomoditse & Ms Hatice: Preschool 2
In our exciting Starry Night theme, we have embarked on an exhilarating journey through the cosmos. Together, we’ve constructed miniature rockets fostering teamwork and sparking imagination. Our artistic endeavors included painting a mesmerizing Starry Night scene, allowing the children to express their creativity. The theme extended to immersive role plays, such as night camping, delightful restaurant dinners, handling emergencies in a make-believe hospital, and venturing into the unknown with space exploration scenarios. We also discussed bedtime routines and the importance of clean teeth. We are recognizing our names and trying to write them. In phonics, we embraced aural experiences with instrumental and safari sounds, enriching language development. Meanwhile, in mathematics our focus is on the concept of the number 4, exploring its significance and composition.
Miss Lauren & Miss Melike: Reception
This term we have been learning about the differences between night and day. We chose to wear our pyjamas to school for the day! We brought in our favourite bedtime story and toy. We looked through our books with our friends and read them together. Some of us put our toys to bed using blankets and read our toys a bedtime story. We have been looking at nocturnal animals and have been making nocturnal animal art using a variety of techniques. Here we are in action! We always work hard in Reception and have fun!
Year One
Miss Katrine & Miss Sena: 1D
In 1D, we have started our new art unit on printing. The students have explored which things we can use to create prints and how we can go about printing in order to create the effect we want. In the photos you can see them exploring printing with apples. They have also explored using classroom objects to print, as well as designing and creating their own stamps. During this unit, we have also revised primary and secondary colours and colour mixing. The children have had a lot of fun exploring different printing techniques and demonstrated creativity in creating their pictures.
Miss Belen & Miss Sena: 1G
As we returned back from our Wınter break we have been busy learnıng how to tell the time to the hour and half past, we have practıced with manipulative materials to make it more engaging and fun. We have also been introducing the concepts of units and tens since we are introducing two-digit numerals and revisiting concepts like odd and even numbers, estimating and number patterns. During Art lessons we have learning about printing and how dıfferent materials can be suitable for this purpose, we had a lot of fun experimenting wıth apples and different shapes. In English we have been focusıng on identifying similarities and differences between stories, and we created a Venn Diagram to organize our sorting out. It has been amazing to come back and have so much fun together!
Year Two
Ms. Verralls, Ms. Aycan, and Miss Neslihan: 2V & 2A
Year 2 went back in time to a time before computers, supermarkets and technology. A time known in history as Prehistoric. All the children participated by dressing up. The children started every day gathering their food for the day ahead. They enjoyed making their own tribe bone necklace with salt dough, making fossils and also trying felting for the first time. They worked together in groups to build shelters and grind grains to make flour. They learned all about prehistoric animals and made cave paintings. Other activities included. Stone Age counting, clay sculptures, making their own language, creating hair accessories, understanding the chronological order of events on a timeline and enjoying a hot chocolate with a story. We were lucky with the sunshine and were able to sing and dance in the Botanical gardens every day. A great week was had by all.
Year Three
Mrs. Robbins & Miss Neslihan: 3R
In 3R, the students are learning about different ways to send written communication such as letters, emails, and postcards. The students have read Meercat Mail and are writing a post card as if they are the main character, Sunny.
Ms. Adesanya & Miss Neslihan: 3A
In art in 3A, we have been studying textures.
Texture is the way something feels to the touch or looks to the eye. We have been exploring natural and visual texture using fibre tip pens. We used different shapes and patterns. We also used lineweight, density and shading. Textures can be; bumpy, woven, fluffy, rough, scaly, sandy and more.
Year Four
Ms. Lincoln & Miss Zerrin: 4L
A busy time as always in Year 4L. Lots of science activities, observing kinetic and heat energy. Also liquid particles mixing together. Our greatest part of the new year was definitely our assembly, "Greeks Got Talent". Amazing perforformances from all the children. How confident and strong they are!
Ms. Newman & Miss Zerrin: 4N
4N have enjoyed learning about fractions and decimals in their maths lessons. Using the powerful 'Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract' approach, children began their learning journey by using physical resources, including Rekenreks with 100 beads to represent hundredths, as well as coloured counters on place value charts to understand how to write tenths and hundredths as both fractions and decimals. From this they were able to progress to interpreting and completing visual representations of these fractions and decimals, finally moving into purely abstract numberical values. This will enable children to have a deep conceptual understanding in order to progress into other areas of mathematics such as money and percentages.
Year Five
Ms. Halabi & Miss Mos: 5H
Students in 5H have been looking at and discussing the book ‘Flotsam’ by David Wiesner. Given that ‘Flotsam’ is a wordless picture book, it presents unique opportunities for creative writing activities. In Science, we have reviewed the different food groups and talked about the importance of a balanced diet. We have also been exploring the history of the Hagia Sophia and its unique features. As part of our DT unit, the student will get together in groups to design and construct simple models of the Hagia Sophia, paying attention to its architectural details.
Mrs. Deufel & Miss Mos: 5D
In English our unit has been on instructions. We have looked at a variety of instructions and decided on a list of common features. The children had fun following instructions around the school to find different locations. This made them realise how important it is that instructions are clear and concise. The final piece of work was to write a set of instructions on how to cook a rainbow!
In Maths, we have been working on written methods for multiplication and division. The children have are also revising their times tables to increase their speed and accuracy. In DT, we are combining our humanities unit and constructing a model of the Hagia Sophia. The children started by looking at different buildings from the early Eastern Roman Empire. The initial task was to sketch some of the main buildings.
Year Six
Ms. Ward & Mr. Furkan: 6W
Black Sea Maths Cup 2024
A team of 10 eager students took part in this competition last week, from 6M, 6W and 5D. The competition was for students wanting to challenge themselves with calculations and problem solving, in a timed event. They worked extremely well, had a great attitude and performed outstandingly. There were 19 schools taking part and our team achieved 5th place. Our two highest scorers, Jeine and Agastyaa, achieved the second highest score in the competition, with only 6 other students achieving the same score.
Class Assembly
We are busy preparing for our class assembly by collaborating in writing teams to bring you an interesting interpretation of three well-known Fairy Tales. The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood are being reconstructed with some clever writing choices. Stay tuned!
Clay work
To finish our topic about coastal areas the students designed a clay relief. These are going to look fantastic, especially once they’re kiln dried and painted. They took their time building up the layers and planning which coastal features to include. It was fun learning about a clay ‘slurry’ and how the clay can be reconstituted, even after it seems too dry and crumbly.
Languages
Miss Talya: KS1 ESL
KS1 has been working hard on their skills of forming grammatically correct sentences. They have been learning the past tense along with the irregular past tense by playing games such as making their own bingo along with making puzzles where they can practice at home. For Year 1 we have chosen the poem “Cloud” and tried to write our own poem by understanding key words and creating our own meaningful poem with the title “Cloud”. Year 2 students have been forming sentences using the past tense and drew pictures by recalling events from the past.
This month has been very exciting as Year 2 students were also busy doing various activities in our prehistoric week. We have been carrying out discussions in our ESL lessons to support the learning in class and to improve our speaking skills. Learning about the prehistoric time period also gave children the opportunity to appreciate some of our resources and to differentiate our past history from the present time.
Mrs. Gwilliam: KS2 ESL
Back to school after the winter break and the Year 3 and Year 4 students wrote about their holidays practising past tense and new vocabulary. They were proud of their display. After that Year 3 read a story and then sequenced pictures to tell and write a parallel story. Our elementary student learned different ways to talk about ability. He can play the piano very well! Meanwhile Year 5 and 6 worked on organising a text about a toy or object that is important to them. The results were very interesting and we enjoyed reading them.
Ms. Ana: Spanish
¡Hola amigos!
Year 3 is learning the topic of clothes. Students are working on the vocabulary and the description of clothes.
Year 4 is learning the topic of body parts. Students are required to identify parts of the body as well as to describe a monster in Spanish.

Ms Bartola and Miss Jess
What food should my child be eating?
Children should be eating plenty of nutritious, minimally processed foods from the five food groups:
fruit
vegetables and legumes/beans
grains (cereal foods)
lean meat and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans
milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or their alternatives
What foods should we be avoiding?
Too many nutritionally-poor foods and drinks (high in added fats, sugars and salt) has been linked to emotional and behavioural problems in children and adolescents.
How can good eating habits support children’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing?
Fuelling children with the right foods helps support their growth and development.
What children eat not only affects their physical health but also their mood, mental health and learning.
Research shows that eating a healthy and nutritious diet can improve mental health, enhance cognitive skills like concentration and memory and improve academic performance.
Top Tips for Encouraging Healthy Eating Habits at Home:
Have regular family meals.
Serve a variety of healthy foods and snacks.
Work fruit and vegetables into the daily routine.
Let children invite a friend to dinner.
Involve your child in meal planning and preparation.
