Dear Parents,
Today we would like to share with you our new Primary Newsletter format. Each year group will be represented so that parents may get a flavour of what is happening in class.
In addition to this we would like to share our new 'Parent Pages'. We have developed one for each site. We would suggest that you bookmark the page as we will be regularly updating the page.
We understand that parents are sometimes unsure who to contact when they have a query, to this end we have attached a full list of teachers and contact information for the administrative and school leadership team with their relevant areas of responsibility. We have also created a new position 'Parental Liaison', please feel free to share any feedback or observations with Ms Vaccaro, which you feel may improve the clarity of our communications.
Last but not least I thank the PTA for their assistance in initiating and organising the 'Ukraine Collection'.
With best wishes for a safer and brighter future for all,
Natalia Ambridge
Global Community Week
BISI Primary students and staff enjoyed celebrating Global Community Week! It was a wonderful opportunity to explore ways different cultures have contributed to our lives, discuss how culture shapes who we are, and share the importance of tolerance and inclusion. The children enjoyed participating in a flag parade wearing clothing and colours from their respective cultures. Well done to all!
A special thank you to Mr. Mayer for the fantastic photos!

EYFS
Learning about Time by Ms. Louise
The children in EYFS2 National School have been learning about time, the parts of a clock and how to read 'o'clock' times. They had lots of fun making their own clocks by sticking each number in the correct place, adding the minute and hour hands and then decorating. The class used their creations to practically explore how to use a clock by asking each other questions, such as 'what time is it?', 'which is the minute hand?' and 'can you show me 2 o'clock?' They really enjoyed the activity and did a great job!
EYFS Music Overview by Mr. Alper
This month in music classes with EYFS, we started lessons with body and vocal warm ups. We tried to keep the beat to the song “Musical Priest”. With one leader creating a dance, we copied the movements and danced. We echoed the instrument rhythms and got used to the rhythmic patterns. We sang echoes in the "Groundhog Song". We kept the beat around chairs to the songs “Page’s Train” and “Chew Chew” while trying to analyse fast and slow. We moved to the songs “Cheer for 100”, “Count and Go”, “This is My Speaking Voice”, and “Andy Pandy” songs. We also learned the song “Hey! Hey! Look At Me” and did body percussion to it.
Global Community Week in the Butterfly Class by Ms. Katrine
This month, we celebrated Global Community Week. As a part of this, the students in Butterfly Class learnt about and celebrated the things that make us all unique. We discussed how our families may be different, we may speak different languages and we might have things about our appearances that make us look different from our friends. The students also learnt that, despite our differences, we have so many things in common. Finally, we learnt about different countries, had food from a range of cultures and we made our own passports so we can visit some of the amazing places we have been learning about this month!
Year One
Y1 City Campus Overview by Ms. Lorenz
In Maths, we learnt how to use balance scales to measure weight. We compared two different objects and determined which was heavier or lighter. We also learnt how to measure weight using nonstandard units by counting how many cubes an object weighed. We learnt how to measure the volume of liquids using millilitres. We practised measuring weight and volume by cooking muffins! In Literacy, we have been learning the story of The Snail and the Whale. We learnt to structure stories and wrote our own version of the story! We read our story books to someone special at school! In Art, we are learning about Printmaking. We used different objects to make print patterns such as legos, beads and other toys. We experimented with homemade stamps and also made our own stamps to make a print!
Music Overview by Mr. Alper
Year 1 played different games with the songs “Gigue” and "Little Tommy Tiddlemouse" during which students tried to recognise their friends from their voices. Students learned the songs "Rig a Jig Jig" and "Un, Deux, Trois" and enjoyed dancing in their special movement patterns.
Y1Students enjoyed participating in experiments with Secondary students during Science Club ECA with Ms. Verralls and Ms. Derya.
Y1 National Maths by Ms. Alexis
In maths we are learning about measuring weight. To help us understand what kilograms are and how to use them we made cookies in class. We followed a recipe using the measurements to weigh the ingredients on the weighing scale. We all agreed the cookies tasted delicious!
Making Sandwiches by Ms. Reed
This week Tortoise Class had lots of fun making jam sandwiches. On Monday we had a robot visitor and we had to explain how to make a jam sandwich. The robot didn’t understand us to begin with but after thinking carefully about which words to use the robot finally made a delicious jam sandwich. On Tuesday it was our turn! We washed our hands and got everything that we needed ready to make our sandwiches. We developed lots of skills in spreading butter and jam and cutting the bread into two equal pieces. On Wednesday and Thursday we developed our language to help us reinforce sequencing words and imperative verbs. We took all this information and wrote our very own draft instructions and then a final copy for our own class book! Now we are able to look at it, talk about it and read it during our daily reading in class time. Enjoy the super photos!
Year Two
Y2 Science by Mr. Murray
In our science lesson, we tried to solve the problem of designing an umbrella for one of our cuddly toys from home. We discussed how we could make the test fair and then tested different materials using drops of water from a pipette. Our predictions mostly came true.
Y2 Students enjoyed participating in experiments with Secondary students during Science Club ECA with Ms. Verralls and Ms. Derya.
Year Three
Y3 National Valentine's Day Activities by Ms. Kocaman
We expressed our love with each other by talking with our students about what love is. We stated that we can express our love sometimes by smiling, sometimes hugging, sometimes by saying I LOVE YOU and sometimes by giving gifts. And we designed keychains to express our love. Happy Valentine's Day!
Exoskeletons by Ms. Lynne
Year 3 explored exoskeletons by crafting their own! Each group was challenged to create an exoskeleton to protect their insect insides by being strong, lightweight, hard, and waterproof. Students rose to the challenge and created some awesome super-bugs! We learned that the best exoskeletons need many layers for protection.
Y3 National Students are working together to compose, read, sing, and play music with Mr. Dennison.
Year Four
Pouch Project by Mr. Wraxall
During our January and February 2022 DT classes the year fours have been designing, testing and producing a range of pouches to give a friend or family member, or to keep precious things of their own in. The students did an amazing job, designing and making the pouches from start to finish. Many students chose to stay in at break times to make their pouches and practise their sewing stitches because they enjoyed the project so much.
Y4 National Students recently learned about tooth decay and its causes. The students designed a fair test to analyse the effects of different liquids on our teeth, using boiled eggs as a tooth substitute. Children made predictions about what each liquid would do to the egg shell. Then, students made daily observations to track and record the changes among the eggs.
Y4 Geography Unit by Ms. Newman
At the end of each humanities unit, primary children use the skills and knowledge they have gained for a meaningful purpose. Year 4 children completed their geography unit ‘The Bosphorus’ and were able to share all they had learnt in a synoptic task - speaking as a Bosphorus boat tour guide. Although the children were not able to go on the usual field trips to collect data and make observations, due to the pandemic, they made good use of online resources such as maps, photographs and videos to describe places in more detail. This enabled them to compare and contrast areas along the Bosphorus, such as Besiktas, Bebek and Andolu Kavagi. They were able to use these digital resources to identify human and physical geographical features and discuss how human impact and physical processes can be both good and bad - debating the benefits and drawbacks of the construction of the third Bosphorus bridge. By studying a range of satellite images they improved their ability to use the eight compass points, and they were able to draw their own map using a key and common symbols. We focused on the importance of the Bosphorus strait, by identifying the types of boats on a live ‘vessel tracker’ and discovering their trading routes, as well as learning more about the types of fish in the Bosphorus and how fishing regulations have changed over the years. Children thoroughly enjoyed writing their own script as their end of unit assessment to demonstrate their new expertise of the Bosphorus.
Year Five
Simple Machines by Ms. Lloyd
As part of our Year 5L investigation into simple machines, students productively constructed lollipop catapults to show how levers work. They went on to construct more models to include incline planes, screws and wheel and axles. Take a look at our finished products!
Year Six
Y6 Students work on a geography lesson during French with Mr. Vincent.
