Each year TEA requires districts to administer a reading screener to 7th-grade students who were unsuccessful on 6th-grade Reading STAAR. Once the screeners have been administered, the RTI committee must then meet to determine if students are at risk for Dyslexia or other reading deficiencies. If it is determined they are at risk, parents must be notified and students placed in Tier 3 interventions.
7th Grade Screener Next Steps:
Appoint a teacher to administer MAP Fluency. This can be done in groups of 15 or less. It takes about 20 minutes. Once you know who this will be, please let Carol Wilborn know so she can schedule a time to train them on how to administer MAP Fluency.
Once teachers are done with MAP Fluency administration, please reach out to Carol again so she can go through reporting with them.
Using the data from the MAP Growth & MAP Fluency, campuses should determine students who are in danger of being At Risk for Dyslexia or other reading deficiencies. (See the Screener Plan linked below for more information)
RTI committee meetings for those students to determine if students should be served in Tier 3 for intervention.
You may also consider additional students whose reading abilities are currently below grade level to determine if they are candidates for Tier 3 or other additional testing.
Once the RTI meetings are held, letters regarding the intervention placement in Tier 3 need to be sent home by November 10, 2023. (Linked below)
Linked below are the documents needed to complete this process.
