Academic Grading

Grades are EARNED, not GIVEN! All grades are based on a teacher’s professional judgment after careful consideration of all aspects of a student’s performance. All teachers will furnish a course syllabus during the first week of class with the grading criteria clearly defined. Teachers may opt to grade based on a 4-point grading scale or a corresponding 100 percentage point scale. For reference, please utilize the table below to identify grade values.

Note that the point values for academic grades are applicable only to the un-weighted grade point average (GPA). For weighted GPA's, additional bonus points are added based on the performance of the student and the academic level of the course. For all advanced placement (AP) and dual enrollment (DE) courses, students that earn a final grade of a "B" or an "A" will earn two (2) additional points to the original point value of the grade. For a final grade of a "C" only one (1) additional point is added to the original point value of the grade. For honors level courses, only one (1) additional point is added to the original point value of the grade if the student earns at least a "C" in the class. No additional points are added for a final grade of a "D" or an "F" in any course.

INTERIM PROGRESS REPORTS

An interim progress report must be sent home by the teacher to the parent at any time during the grading period when it becomes evident that the student is performing unsatisfactorily in academics, conduct, or effort. Interim progress reports will be disseminated to all students at mid-grading period that will reflect earned grade/performance evaluation to this point. Prior to the end of the grading period, if the student shows a decline in performance, a second interim progress report will be issued. It is the teacher's responsibility to award a grade commensurate with the student's performance. Additionally, the teacher shall send an interim progress report to the parents of students whose performance shows a decline prior

to the end of each grading period to inform the parents of their child’s status. In order to minimize paperwork, the interim progress report shall be transmitted on a standardized checklist type form.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards are generated four (4) times a year. Report card grades are to provide the student and/or student's parent with an objective evaluation of the student's scholastic achievement, effort, and conduct, as well as the student’s attendance, including absences and tardiness. Students' academic grades are to reflect their academic achievement. Students who receive passing grades on their report cards can be assumed to be working within a range acceptable for the grade or course.

Grades in conduct and effort are to reflect objectively the student's progress independent of academic achievement. Standards for grading in these areas are explained to the students by the teacher. CONDUCT implies the degree to which a student relates to others in socially acceptable ways; EFFORT implies the

degree to which students have demonstrated a desire to learn or to engage in learning tasks which should lead to a mastery of educational goals.

OPTING-OUT | Progress Reports and Report Cards

Miami-Dade County Public Schools has established a method by which parents may opt-out of receiving the paper report card/progress report in lieu of an electronic distribution through the Parent Grade Viewer accessible through the parent portal. Doing so ensures that your child doesn't misplace the report card and allows the parent a real-time view of his/her performance.

Register to Opt-Out

Once registered, you will no longer receive a printed report card or interim progress report. If you have never viewed an electronic report card, please follow these steps:
