Update on Open Gyms and Tryouts

Billings West High Basketball Pre-Season Letter Home

This letter needs to be taken home to your parents/guardians.  It is important that everyone is informed of the process of choosing a basketball team.

·   Each player trying out needs to have an updated physical in our school.  Do not wait!!!!  You will not be allowed to participate in tryouts without one.  Yes, this will hurt your chances of making a team IF YOU MISS DAYS OF TRYOUTS.  For those of you in a fall sport chances are that you are already covered. Check to be sure.

·   Plan ahead!  Tryouts first day is Nov. 20 (Monday).  If you are planning on a family vacation during this time and will be missing tryouts (or other practices that week if you make a team) you may need to consider not trying out.  We are looking for committed players.  Communicate with me if this applies.  There are exceptions.

Open gyms: 2-3 per week (consists of shooting workouts, ball handling, 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5)

      Sunday 5-7 PM & Thursday 730-845 PM/Tuesday & Thursday AM shoot 7:00-7:35 AM.

·   Open gyms help the coaches get to know each player and helps the evaluation process.  If you are not in a fall sport, it is highly recommended that you attend open gyms.  Those of you in fall sports should work on your ball handling and shooting each week.  If it is important, you will budget your time wisely.  There are rules for those participating at the Varsity level.  You will NOT be allowed to engage in an activity where injury could occur.   You will be allowed to shoot on your own. Shooting workouts will be provided. They are timed and you need to keep track of your time and try to beat that time each workout.

·   Tryout schedule:

November 20-22, (3:15-6:30PM) Frosh/Soph 315-445/5PM JV/V 445-630PM.  Cuts will be made after Wednesday’s tryout- November 22nd.

*The ideal numbers for the freshmen team is 10- 12, Soph Team- 10-11 and 16-20 JV/Varsity teams.

Lady Bear Basketball Tryout policies

The Lady Bear Basketball program strives to develop a team composed of student athletes as well as student leaders. We want our athletes to represent our program and school in a positive manner. To achieve this goal, coaches must select athletes that show both athletic skill as well as quality leadership ability. The following criterion, in no particular order, has been established to create a quality basketball program:

1.  Overall athletic ability

2.  Overall Basketball ability (Shooting, rebounding, passing, dribbling, defense)

3.  Basketball IQ (Intelligence level)

4.  Leadership skills

5.  Communication skills

6.  Ability to be coached

7.  Character on and off the court (Attitude)

8.  Strength at Position (PG, Wings, Posts)

Drills are set up to help coaches test these skills and abilities.  The coaches will formulate their own list of players looking at the player’s grade level, position and ability to play more than one position.  Seniors who are not as skilled as underclassmen will have a much tougher time making the varsity, juniors the j.v. team. Etc…,

*Coaches evaluate players using a 1 thru 10 point system for each category.  10 being the best a player can receive.
