World Languages

¡Bienvenidos al Departamento de Lenguas Extranjeras!

Welcome to the World Languages Department!

We are a core elective subject at Big Foot High School.  We teach levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. We offer AP Spanish online.  Our approach to language teaching is hands-on, with emphasis on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Because of the nature of language learning, we also contribute to reinforcing skills in other subjects, such as English, Social Studies, Art, and simple Arithmetic.  While our subjects are not required for graduation from high school, universities require 2-4 years of language study within the same language for admission.  In many instances, these universities will accept the credits from our school, if the grade is above a certain point.  In other cases where they don’t accept our credits directly, students may receive retroactive credits after taking the placement test and taking the class recommended by that test.  This will result in the earning of credits that will make it possible for the student to graduate earlier or take classes in their chosen field of study.

This year, we have Mrs. Anne Marie Gump as the English as Second Language teacher. Our ELL students receive one on one help with classes like Reading, Geometry,  Biology, Computer applications and  others She has has two resource classes & one  English as a second language in which she helps our ELL students comprehend the materials given by their teacher to complete their assignments on time.

Why Study a Second Language?

OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD have become more and more interdependent, and new technologies have erased many existing borders. As boundaries between countries are dissolved, foreign language instruction has become more necessary than ever for linking with the rest of the world and for producing an enlightened citizenship able to

function in today’s ever-shrinking world. (http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/759)
