## Graduation Requirements

Big Foot High School (BFHS) requires a minimum of three years of mathematics. This requires students to complete Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Many four-year colleges require three years of high school mathematics for admission. BFHS highly recommends that college-bound students take four years of math. BFHS has several fourth-year options that include honors and Advanced Placement classes.

## Literacy Expectations

Students taking mathematics courses at Big Foot High School must be able to read, analyze, interpret, and describe mathematical concepts in tables, graphs, and equations. They must apply mathematical thinking to real-world problems. Students must characterize mathematical concepts using English Language with appropriate mathematical language in context – whether written or verbally. Students must display procedural skill as well as mathematical understanding. They must develop both mathematical processes and proficiencies. It is not enough that they can arrive at a solution; students must also describe their methods and justify their reasoning.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematical Practice characterize mathematically literate students. These students can make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. The reason both abstractly and quantitatively. They construct viable arguments and critique the reason of others. They use technology as a tool to investigate and model mathematical concepts. They use appropriate tools strategically and attend to precision. They look for and make use of the structure. They recognize and generalize patterns, and then use those patterns to make predictions. They look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
