Hello, I am Mr. Johnson. I have taught Fine Arts at Timber Creek since 2005. I have an Associates in Fine Art/Graphic Design from Camden County College, a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Rowan, and a Bachelors of Education from Rowan University.

All of the assignments are available in Google Classroom for students to access, Please visit my Google Classroom site for any updates about class and information.

Classroom Rules & Expectations

1. Electronics

Cell Phones, Wireless Headphones/Earbuds & Smartwatches

Cell phones, wireless headphones/earbuds, and smartwatches are not permitted for student use in class, in accordance with New Jersey law and district policy.

Students are expected to have these devices put away for the entire class period.

Failure to follow the district's electronics policy may result in an immediate discipline referral. There will be no warnings regarding the use of prohibited electronic devices.

Chromebooks

School-issued Chromebooks are to be used for art-related instructional purposes only.

• Chromebooks should remain put away unless we are actively using them for an assignment.

• GoGuardian may be used to monitor and document Chromebook activity during class.

• Attempting to bypass, disable, or circumvent GoGuardian or other school technology restrictions will result in an AUP violation referral to your Vice Principal and parent/guardian notification.

Personal Devices

Personal electronic devices, including personal Chromebooks, laptops, and tablets, are not permitted for use in class in accordance with district policy.

These expectations are enforced for the entire class period, until the bell rings.

Consequences for violating the electronics policy may/can include:

• Loss of classwork points

• Parent/guardian phone call or email

• Detention

• Discipline referral / Visit to Vice Principal

2. Being On Time

Being on time means being inside the classroom when the bell rings.

Lateness to class will not be tolerated. If you arrive after the bell, you must have an appropriate pass and present it to me when you enter the classroom.

The school policy regarding teacher detention will be enforced. Continued lateness may result in additional disciplinary action.

No pass = late.

3. Appropriate Language

Foul, disrespectful, or abusive language will not be tolerated.

Students are expected to communicate respectfully with classmates, teachers, and other school personnel. Inappropriate language may result in disciplinary action and loss of daily classwork points.

4. Remain in Your Seat

Students are expected to remain in their assigned seats and work areas for the entire class period unless they have permission to move.

Do not walk around the classroom to socialize, visit other students, or gather at the door before the bell.

Do not line up at the door before dismissal.

Leaving your seat or lining up early may result in a loss of classwork points and, if the behavior continues, detention or further disciplinary action.

5. This Is Not a Study Hall

Art class is not a study hall period.

The time provided during class is valuable studio work time. You are expected to use that time to work on your assigned artwork and participate in the activities associated with this course.

Working on assignments for other classes during Art class is not permitted.

6. Be Respectful, Responsible & Productive

Students are expected to be:

• Polite

• Responsible

• Productive

• Respectful

• On task

You are responsible for making good use of your class time and contributing positively to the classroom environment.

7. Lavatory & Nurse Procedures

The use of the lavatory and nurse is a privilege, not an automatic right.

Lavatory Expectations

• No lavatory passes during the first five minutes or last five minutes of class.

• Sign your name on the classroom bathroom sign-up sheet as you enter class.

• Do not erase another student's name or cut in front of someone else. If you do, you will lose your opportunity to go.

• You must have your school ID around your neck to leave the classroom.

NO ID = NO BATHROOM

• Create a SmartPass at the Lavatory Kiosk by the door before leaving.

• You must return within the amount of time allotted by SmartPass.

• You must sign out when leaving and sign back in when you return.

• Going somewhere other than the lavatory or wandering the halls may result in the loss of lavatory privileges and notification of your Vice Principal.

• Only one student may be out at the lavatory at a time. If another student is already out, you must wait until they return.

8. Discipline

Students will generally receive one reminder when a classroom expectation is not followed.

A repeated need for reminders, continued disruption, or failure to follow classroom expectations may result in:

• Lunch detention

• Parent/guardian phone call or email

• Administrative referral

• Additional consequences as determined by school administration

The goal of these expectations is to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive environment where everyone can create and learn.

9. Clean-Up & Work Areas

Students are responsible for maintaining a clean and organized workspace. This includes:

• Cleaning your individual work area

• Returning supplies to their proper locations

• Keeping the sink area clean

• Removing scraps, wrappers, and other debris

• Sweeping up debris when necessary using the brush and dustpan

• Wiping surfaces with a damp paper towel when appropriate

Clean-up is part of your classwork responsibility.

Work areas left messy or with wrappers, scraps, or other debris may result in a loss of classwork points for the day.

Absences

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.

You are responsible for checking Google Classroom, obtaining missed information, and completing any assignments or work that were assigned during your absence.

Failure to complete or obtain missed work may result in a zero for the missing assignment.

Late Assignments

Projects are expected to be submitted on or before the posted due date.

Failure to submit a project on time may result in a deduction from your grade.

Beginning with the 4th Marking Period, late assignments will not be accepted.

I will not repeatedly remind students to turn in missing or overdue assignments. It is your responsibility to know when assignments are due and to submit them on time.

If you need additional time to complete a project, use available studio time effectively, including Charger Time, or speak with me about signing the project out to complete at home when permitted.

Grading

District-Wide Grading Policy

Projects — 50%

Projects must be completed in their entirety to receive full credit.

Students are expected to use available studio time wisely. If additional time is needed, students may come in during Charger Time or, when permitted, sign out a portfolio, materials, and your project out to complete at home.

Classwork — 30%

Classwork grades are based on your performance during the class period, including:

• Work ethic

• Productivity

• Participation

• Appropriate use of class time

• Following classroom expectations

• Behavior

• Clean-up and care of the classroom

Being present is not the same as participating. Your daily effort and productivity matter.

Critiques, Quizzes & Homework — 20%

This category includes verbal and written critiques, quizzes, and homework assignments.

Critique grades are based on:

• Participation in discussions

• Thoughtful responses

• Use of appropriate art vocabulary

• Respectful behavior while others are speaking

Students can expect approximately 1–2 homework assignments per week.

Homework assignments should:

• Be completed on white paper

• Include your name

• Be photographed clearly

• Be uploaded to the appropriate Google Classroom assignment thread

Final Reminder

Art class is a place to create, experiment, make mistakes, solve problems, and grow as an artist. Your success in this course depends on your willingness to participate, use your time wisely, respect others, care for our classroom, and take responsibility for your work.

Come prepared. Stay focused. Be respectful. Create something you're proud of.
