The NYS PTA began PARP in 1978. It is a program that asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, neighbor, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily. PARP helps cements the necessary bond between home and school to encourage a love of reading in our children.
Throughout the month of March, you will be asked to track your reading minutes on the supplied reading log calendar. Those minutes will be turned in each week to your child's classroom teacher.
Simplify what PARP is for your child by listening to this book together.
Don't forget to add your first reading minutes on your reading log!

At Pashley, we join our enthusiasm for reading with fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region. A packet of materials explaining the option to fundraise for RMHC has also been sent home.
Your family does not have to fundraise for RMHC to participate in PARP. We are hoping for full participation in our Pashley PARP reading challenge, and have fun things planned throughout the month of March to help you meet your reading goal.
Your Family Reading Goal = 20 minutes daily or
at least 400 minutes for the month of March
School Reading Goal = 118,680 minutes or at least 1978 hours (same as the year PARP began)
If Pashley meets our reading goal, then a school wide popcorn party will be provided to all students.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region provides a "home away from home" for families with children undergoing medical treatment. This support alleviates the stress of finding housing and meals while their child receives care, allowing families to focus on their child's recovery.
Read for RMHC is a fundraising program that supports this mission. By encouraging reading and collecting donations based on reading goals, schools and communities directly contribute to the vital services provided by RMHC.

Below you will find links to the Read for RMHC program launch videos. Students watched these videos in school, but please feel free to watch them at home to understand the impact you can make by joining our team.
The link below takes you to a library of videos you can show at the beginning of each week throughout the month to remind you and your child of the WHY, and help them put a face to the people they are volunteering their time to help.
We're so excited to have you join us on this reading adventure! Our "Reading is a Treasure" program is designed to spark a lifelong love of reading in children, and we believe that families play a crucial role in making that happen. Here's how you can maximize your experience and create lasting reading habits:
1. The Magic of Reading Together: There's truly nothing better than sharing a book with your child. It's a special bonding experience that fosters a love of reading and creates lasting memories. Take some time during this program (and beyond!) to establish regular reading routines. Even 15-20 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Think about incorporating reading into your bedtime routine, or setting aside some quiet time after dinner to explore stories together. These shared reading moments are treasures in themselves!
2. Explore the Library: Our local library is a treasure trove of resources! Beyond borrowing books, they offer a variety of programs and events that can enrich your child's reading journey. Be sure to check out their calendar of events for story times, book clubs, and other exciting activities.
3. Conquer Our PARP Challenges: We've designed some fun and engaging PARP challenges throughout the program, and completing them is a great way to earn extra prizes! These challenges will encourage your child to explore different genres, read with different partners, and try new reading activities. Keep an eye out for the challenge sheets and get ready to dig into some great books! Did you miss this week's weekly challenge? Check it out here.
4. Join Our Weekly PARP Events: We'll be hosting weekly PARP events filled with fun activities, games, and of course, lots of reading! These events are a fantastic opportunity to connect with other families, share reading tips, and celebrate the joy of reading together. Check the schedule for dates and times – we can't wait to see you there! Check out our PARP Events page for more information!
5. Celebrate at Our Wrap-Up Event: We'll be culminating our "Reading is a Treasure" program with a special wrap-up event at the library! This will be a chance to celebrate everyone's reading achievements, enjoy some special activities, and receive recognition for all your hard work. More details about the date and time will be shared on the PARP Events page soon – it's an event you won't want to miss!
