Franklin is our school, our second home and we should treat it as such. You don't have bare walls and blank spaces all over your house, so why do we have them at our school?
Let's brighten up Franklin with a little bit of green!
Without green spaces, Franklin looks unwelcoming.
Franklin, and high school in general, is a high-stress environment. Everyone is trying to do their best and be their best. In such an intimidating atmosphere it is important that we feel as welcomed as possible. In addition to our community displaying this, our surroundings should reflect this as well. Franklin as it is looks bleak and unwelcoming when it comes to the blacktop and courtyard which is where many students spend a lot of their time.
The Development in Going Greener
We began our project by assessing the means of budgeting, as we know we don't have an unlimited inventory. The most basic things we need are seeds, water, and flower beds. These are our easiest buyables!
Our next steps were seeing what kinds of plants are native in New Orleans, and which of those would look the best on campus!
We then asked around the school: Where would you like to see more greenery?
Most people answered with The Blacktop, or the School's Main and side entrances, but some people even suggested in hallways and classrooms!
And since we now know how, where, and why, we can get started!
Here's Our Plan:
The What
Improve the gardening in the blacktop area and courtyard area using low-maintenance care
Improve the look of the front and sides of the school, to appease to the public
The How
Give students service hours if they work in the garden
Raise money through fundraisers and bake/pizza sales
The Why
Make students feel more at home!
Build our community stronger ❤
Trade-offs
This would require the school to direct funds in to this garden.
Someone/some people would need to dedicate time to taking care of the garden.
Benefits
Our school will look beautiful and move lively
Students could earn service hours right here on campus.
Students can bond by working in the garden with friends, or even meet new people!
In order to take care of the community around us, we have to take care of the earth around us.
