All seniors know the awful, grueling New Orleans rain that has ruined many a students' backpacks. Why sacrifice our precious papers to the unforgiving storm? For bad weather days, we offer a simple solution: stay inside!
On the days of the year with the heaviest rain, we should eliminate the UNO walk completely by switching to our C-day classroom locations.
The trek to and from UNO can leave seniors soggy and sad
I, one of the members of this project, have faced this rain without an umbrella and found my shirt completely soaked through, my shoes filled with water.
No one asked what happened — they were miserable enough on their own, thanks to the puddles they had to wade through to get back to Franklin.
There's a better way. And it's a simple fix.
Our research shows that plenty of students agree with our proposed plan!
In addition, 91.5% agreed that switching to C-day locations on inclement weather days would be helpful.
One student wrote, "I don’t think it’s fair we have to walk through the rain when something could easily happen to us."
Another student retells how "...almost all my stuff (chrome book included) got wet" on the walk back from UNO.
Overall, respondents would agree with the student who replied "...it kind of takes me out of the Franklin experience."
When the bad weather plan kicks in, bring all UNO classes back to the Katherine Johnson campus.
Switch all classes to the usual C-day locations so the UNO students know where to go.
The day could remain on the regular A- or B-day schedule in terms of the timing (with the Inclement Weather Plan adjustments for lunch).
The locations would just be all in one building, rather than spread between two distant campuses.
Trade-offs
Switching to C-Day locations can make the school crowded.
Benefits
Students would stay dry.
The school would know all students are inside, rather than having some students outside walking through a storm.
The C-Day locations are something students already know, making the transition relatively easy.
This is a simple improvement that makes bad weather days safer and more effective. When the Inclement Weather Plan goes into effect, bring UNO students home.
