As humans, we deal in ideas—and the more vivid and resonant idea’s expression, the stronger its currency. This three-part mini-course will show you how idea visualization serves as a portal to deep conceptual understanding. While we are trained extensively in verbalizing our ideas (i.e. speaking & writing), explicit training in idea visualization in traditional academic settings is virtually nonexistent. We want to change that.
Course Details
Part 1 – Introduction to Ideas: What is an idea? What is idea visualisation?
Part 2 – Visual Grammar: Ok, but how do you actually visualise an idea?
Part 3 – DIY Idea Design: What is my idea? How can I visualise my idea?
Our goal is to help you develop a visceral understanding of the power of idea visualization through lecture, discussion & exercise (part 1 & 2) and independent design (part 3). By the end of the course you will have begun your own idea visualization process!
We hope you come to recognize that visualization…
is an expression tool (like writing), that allows you to externalize your ideas
is a powerhouse when it comes to developing and formalizing the structure of your ideas (i.e. your concepts)
is INVALUABLE when it comes to sharing your ideas with a wider audience
and also that visualization…
is NOT data visualization
is NOT infographics (i.e. is NOT just illustrated statistics)
is NOT branding/marketing
is NOT Art or just making things “look pretty”
In the end, a vivid (ie. well visualized) idea has power—the power to be easily understood, the power to resonate, thus the power to inspire new ideas. Please join us in our 3-part mini-course to learn about visualizing ideas and to also help us build our ideas about ideas!

Over the past 5 years we have built an Idea Design studio, working with academics at over 35 top institutions across North America to help them visualize, and therefore design, their ideas. See below for two examples of fully visualized ideas that we are excited about, and check out our Idea Design studio for more!
