Sparrows & Chaffinches
Life in Year 2...
In our History work we have learnt about Robert Falcon Scott and compared his exploration to the Mariana Trench.
The children really enjoyed the Scott Polar museum and this week we had a visit from British Antarctic Survey. The children got to hold ice that was thousands of years old, dress up in the exploration kit, explore food boxes and fossils. We even found out how tall we were in comparison to the tallest penguin. Ask your child how tall the ancient penguin was.
This week we will be focusing on properties of materials in Science.
We have now begun adding and subtracting with 1 and 2 digit numbers. We have used number lines , base ten and drawings to help us.
When you practise at home, make sure you vary your questions e.g. 34=?+14, 16+10=15+?, ?+25=36
This week we have focused on crossing ten when subtracting. Ask your child what exchanging in maths is.
We are now writing our own version of 'Moon Dragons' . Ask you child to tell you the original version and their adapted version!
Reading books should be brought to school each day. On Fridays, we will usually attach a reading challenge to complete using your current book - look out for it in your child's home learning book.
Spelling and Handwriting
Spellings will be set and reviewed each Friday, based on what each pupil needs to practise. Please practise these in home learning books or on handwriting paper, below.
Practise counting and discussing maths at home. See below for our latest KIRFs to practise.
Please find ideas for projects linked to our topic in the letter below.
News and reminders
Please bring non-perishable donations for our Harvest collection by 16th October - there is a collection box in class.
PE will usually take place on a Monday and a Friday for both Sparrows and Chaffinches. However, this can change so please have PE kits in every day!
Please ensure your child has a water bottle every day. We have drinking water in class for refilling.
Some parents have been asking about handwriting. To support this, we have uploaded example handwriting sheets below to show how we teach individual letter formation. If you are able to print off a copy to practise at home, that would be great, or if you'd like us to supply you with some, let us know. Please remember to focus on the similarities between the letters on each page as they are grouped by 'family'.
