Reflecting on a Memorable Lunar Campfire in Birmingham

I had the privilege of attending the Lunar Campfire: Reframing the Civic Gospel, Evolving Narratives, and Inspiring Change, co-organized by We Don't Settle and Bertz Associates on 15th July. This thought-provoking event brought together passionate individuals at the Library of Birmingham to discuss the remarkable transformation of our beloved city, Birmingham.

The topics of social, political, and economic changes influencing Birmingham's development and their impact on different communities sparked captivating discussions. As Brummies, we shared our pride in witnessing Birmingham's evolution into the second biggest city in the UK. The city centre's revitalisation and cleanliness stand as a testament to the progress we've made.

However, the event also shed light on the challenges that persist, such as the underdeveloped suburban areas. As we delved deeper into how Birmingham cherishes its young people, a poignant observation from Aaliah Ullah arose. In the digital era, children and teenagers are often caught up with their phones and computers, leading to a potential loss of young voices and energy within the community.

As a member of the community, I couldn't help but reflect on how we can ensure that young voices are heard and valued. The wealth of universities in Birmingham offers tremendous opportunities, but we must also address the issue of talented graduates leaving for London, seeking what they perceive as better prospects.

The Lunar Campfire event made it evident that change starts with us. Whether individuals or organisations, it’s essential for us to join hands and foster a culture of appreciation for people’s opinions and contributions, encouraging everyone to be active participants in shaping Birmingham's future. Collaboratively, we can inspire positive change and address the challenges we face.

This experience has left me motivated and determined to contribute my part in making Birmingham a place where young minds thrive and where all voices find resonance. I feel honoured to be a part of this journey as a member at Bertz Associates, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
