Berklee students - attendance, feedback and grading:
Attendance: I operate the Songwriting Department's attendance policy, which allows for 2 absences (excused or unexcused) before grades are affected. Attendance is included in any grade relating to class participation. 3 or more absences may result in the overall grade being capped at a bare pass. 3 or more absences with non-submission of work may result in an automatic fail grade.
Deadlines: I do not extend deadlines. I do, however, accept work early. So if you have commitments near the published deadline, feel free to submit your assignments the week before (or even earlier).
Late work: I accept late work for partial credit (10% reduction of grade for up to 24h late, rising to cap of bare pass after 1 week).
Feedback: I am a believer in the power of 'formative assessment' - that is, giving you feedback on your work before it is graded. At the end of a course, I will grade all work, but will not provide detailed qualitative feedback after the work is graded. Rather, I offer feedback and consultation throughout the semester, in the spirit of optimising your potential for success. So if you want feedback at any time, please book an office hour session.
Please also note that all my grading at Berklee incorporates our AI academic policy: "[…] using AI to substantially complete coursework—either directly or with modification—and presenting it as original work constitutes a violation of academic integrity and will be treated analogously as receiving help from another person…". That said, I encourage you to use AI for research, for iterating creative work, for summarizing long articles, for analyzing song themes, and for developing ideas etc.
