six-SEVEN. If those two numbers were uttered several months ago, almost an entire room of students would make a weighing motion with their palms while screaming SIX-SEVEN. The room would then descend into fits of laughter, basically chaos. Now, if somebody were to say “six-seven,” they would only get a few odd looks.
Since the beginning of 2025, the phrase “6-7” has been ubiquitous in classrooms and households alike. But now, it has fallen into disuse. So why are people crazy about it? Where did it come from?
The phrase “six-seven” originated from a rap song by Skrilla. After this term went viral on TikTok, a considerable amount of people in Gen Alpha started saying it. Saying 6-7 is closely associated with the seesaw hand gesture. People say this phrase sporadically, and it has helped to build relationships among new kids at school. “We say 6-7 when something good happens,” says 6th grader Yvee L. Among kids at school, 6-7 was very contagious in 2025. When teachers counted from one to nine, classes would break up into disarray after a few seconds.
Nowadays, most people feel that 6-7 is used too excessively. “At the beginning, we used to say it whenever it came up,” says 7th grader Yuna C. “Now, we say it very little. It was outdated by December.” For the general Middle Division population at Berkeley, 6-7 is starting to decline in popularity. Students and teachers alike are hearing this phrase less often. “6-7 is annoying and overused,” says 6th grader Will P. “I think it’s only a matter of time before 6-7 is gone.”
Although 6-7 has been a source of merriment for students, this saying has frequently interrupted crucial learning time in classrooms. “I personally do not like 6-7,” says Ms. LaViale, a 6th grade Language Arts teacher. “It’s only a distraction and serves no purpose.”
Ultimately, the phrase "6-7" briefly gained popularity among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, eliciting a wide range of reactions from different groups of people. Although its fame was short-lived, it played a vital role in weaving bonds among friends. 6-7 was the spark for many special moments that brought laughter and happiness to our lives. Yet, because all good things must come to an end, 6-7 is slowly fading into a thing of the past. Many people think it is an obsolete quote and is best left behind in 2025, while some believe it will be a part of their lives forever. Nevertheless, one thing is without doubt: 6-7's golden hour of fame has passed.
