Each year the Berkeley Bugle writes an article about the new teachers joining our school in the fall. This issue we thought we would spice things up and also write about teachers that have been with us longer.
Mr. Dillinger
Mr. D has taught Latin for 19 years and still finds joy in middle schoolers’ quirky humor and curiosity. He’s taught all three grades of Latin and even 6th-grade Language Arts. What keeps him going is his students' daily gratitude and his willingness to update lessons to keep them exciting.
Advice for new teachers: “Get here super early and prep for your class. Preparing for your class is the most important thing.”
With over 20 years of experience teaching middle school math, Mr. Fisher is a steady, humorous presence who cares most about helping students build a strong foundation before high school. He believes in changing things yearly to stay fresh and takes pride in watching students return to share their stories.
Advice for new teachers: “Sit back and relax because it comes at you fast. Wait a year or two and acclimate your ideas based on that.”
Mr. Beckwith discovered his love of teaching while working in Japan and has since taught everything from Global Studies to American History to World Literature. This is Mr. Beckwith's 19 year at Berkeley. He balances teaching and being a dean and is known for coaching an undefeated girls’ soccer team. He finds teaching both demanding and deeply satisfying.
Advice for new teachers: “It is going to be the hardest job you will do, but it will be very satisfying. It will get easier over time.”
Now the Director of the Middle Division, Mrs. Boss started her career as a swim coach and P.E. teacher. With 33 years under her belt, she still values the school’s culture, the laughter in the halls, and watching students thrive. She continues to stay current through reading and learning about AI and education.
Advice for new teachers: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help or questions.”

Although her interview responses were not included, Sra. Godinho has been a beloved member of the Berkeley faculty for over 15 years. She is known for her consistent dedication, warm classroom environment, and ability to make language learning rigorous and joyful.
Advice for new teachers: “Be open to suggestions. Start the year being strict with your classes, then relax as you see fit.”
