Mock Geisel Award

Touch the Geisel Award Medal

to get to the voting form!

Each year the Geisel Award is given by the American Library Association to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished book for beginning readers. The book must be published in English in the United States the year before the award is given. Although this decision is usually left to school and public librarians to decide, Berkeley Carroll first graders get to choose their own winner!

And the winner is....

It's a tie!

Leave Me Alone! by Vera Brosgol and This is Not a Cat! by David LaRochelle tied for the Berkeley Carroll 2017 Mock Geisel Award win!

We also named four Honor Books:

Is That Wise Pig? by Jan Thomas, Snail & Worm by Tina Kugler, We are Growing! by Laurie Keller, and The Princess in Black and the Hungry Bunny Horde by Shannon and Dean Hale all received Berkeley Carroll Honors.

How did the Berkeley Carroll winners stack up against the 2017 Geisel Winners? We Are Growing! took the gold, with The Infamous Ratsos by Kara LaReau, Go, Otto, Go! by David Milgrim, Oops Pounce Quick Run! by Mike Twohy, and Good Night Owl by Greg Pizzoli receiving honors.
