OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The BHS Virtual Student Learning Center (VSLC) is an online space where you (students) can receive academic support from college tutors, approved academic volunteers, and other BHS students. This is an alternative option for afterschool in-person tutoring at the CCC. The VSLC is open exclusively to ALL BHS students and staff.

Our Zoom room is open from 4:30PM - 6:00PM, MONDAY - THURSDAY.

GUIDELINES

  • The VSLC is for BHS students and staff ONLY.

  • You will only be allowed entry if your registered Zoom account is your first and last name associated with a valid @students.berkeley.net email.

  • For safety and security, all VSLC Zoom sessions, including breakout rooms and text chats, will be recorded.

  • Once you enter the room, check in with Mr. Laurel by typing into the chat or by unmuting and speaking into your mic so he can connect you with a tutor and get you the help you need!

EXPECTATIONS

  • Be respectful and considerate to the tutors, volunteers, and other student participants in the Zoom session.

  • Mute your mic unless you're communicating directly with a host in the main room or unless you are working with a tutor or other students in a breakout room.

There are TWO easy ways to join the VSLC:

  1. Book an appointment with Mr. Laurel by emailing him at matthewlaurel@berkeley.net and you'll be set up with a date/time to join the session and get help from a tutor. This will guarantee you a slot with a tutor and makes things easier on our end to prepare to help you.

  2. Drop in without booking an appointment. This is also a completely acceptable way to come get help in the VSLC, though it may take more time to get you set up depending on how busy we are with in-person tutoring and online appointments.

Either way, click the link below to register and join. Please enter your full first and last name and your @students.berkeley.net email. If possible, use a computer/Chromebook rather than a phone/tablet and update your Zoom application to the latest version.

MR. LAUREL (Host)

Hello BHS community! Some of you may recognize me as "the guy who supervises the CCC after school with all the tutors." Yes, I'm him! This is our online version of the tutoring and study hall space we have in the CCC from 3:30-6:00, M-Th. The VSLC is open from 4:30-6:00. For those of you who may be new to BHS, this service, or to me, my name is Matt Laurel and I've been teaching at BHS for over ten years, mainly as an English teacher in Academic Choice, and I've been the Academic Support Coordinator for the last four. I can assist you in any humanities course, but I'm best at English, essay writing, college personal statement (PIQ, Common App, etc), AP Lang/Lit. I'm also here to connect you with our fantastic team of tutors (as you'll see below) as well as other academic resources.

I just want to acknowledge that there still remains a lot of uncertainty as we transition back to full in-person instruction at Berkeley High while balancing safety with the critical need for student support. The tutors and I will be simultaneously running the VSLC as well as in-person tutoring to support you as best we can as we try out this new hybrid form of afterschool tutoring. 🙏🏽

BERKELEY SCHOOLS VOLUNTEERS

The VLSC will be working with Berkeley Public Schools Fund to bring in approved volunteers to assist with online tutorial support. Visit their website to learn more information or to get involved!

BERKELEY CITY COLLEGE VOLUNTEERS

The VSLC will be partnering with approved Berkeley City College student volunteers for online Math and Science tutoring along with technology support.
