The Z-Lab is a site for multimedia and interdisciplinary collaboration across technical, artistic, and humanistic research areas. It is located at UC Berkeley in the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies. The Z-Lab is both a physical studio within Zellerbach Hall (room Z170) and an experimental multi-location site. It is led by Professor Lisa Wymore with contributions by many partners and collaborators.
Examples of explorations within the Z-Lab include:
Experiments with body sensors and 3D cameras used to enhance choreographic choices
Multi-location/bi-location performance
Real-time embodied technology explorations within live performance
Computationally derived choreographic interventions and instructions
Generative AI collaborations.
These explorations often involve artistic ideas that end up being utilized in works created by Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts. The Z-Lab was created with funding from the Hellman Family Faculty Foundation, The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS), the Digital Humanities initiative, and the Sheldeen G. Osborne Faculty Fellowship.
