Berkeley Undergraduate Number Theory Conference

November 14-15 2020 ONLINE

Update 10/16/2020: The conference will be held online November 14-15.

Update 3/12/2020: The Berkeley Undergraduate Number Theory Conference has been postponed until Fall 2020 due to concerns about the current coronavirus outbreak. This page will be updated when more information is available.

The aim of this conference is to introduce undergraduate students to current areas of research and to generate excitement about number theory and mathematics more generally. The conference will include talks by leading researchers, talks by graduate students, panel discussions, and other activities.

The conference schedule is available here.

Plenary Speakers:

Abstracts for the above talks will be available here.

Further details of the program will be added to this site when available.

Application: Due to space limitations, all participants should apply to the conference. The application form can be found here. The deadline for applications is November 10. Early application is encouraged.

Expected Background: We welcome students with a variety of mathematical backgrounds at this conference. As is often the case in mathematics, what you take away from the conference will depend on your mathematical preparation. Students with a background in abstract algebra and number theory will be able to appreciate the more detailed aspects of the program, whereas students with no prior exposure to these fields will likely leave with a broader sense of the area (which hopefully motivates further study). We will offer breakout sessions aimed at both more and less experienced participants. The panel discussions have no mathematical prerequisites.

Undergraduate talks: We are looking for a few undergraduate students willing to give short talks (5-10 min) on a topic of their interest related to number theory. Students who are interested should use the email address below to submit a proposal.

Organization: This conference is organized by Daniel Bragg, Daniel Chupin, David Corwin, Rahul Dalal, Gabriel Dorfsman-Hopkins, Sebastian Eterovic, Ravi Fernando, Martin Olsson, Sug Woo Shin, Melanie Matchett Wood, and Xinyi Yuan, and is part of the activities of the Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry Group at Berkeley. For questions about the conference, email ucbugconference2020@gmail.com.

Acknowledgements: This conference is part of the activities of the Research Training Grant Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry at Berkeley funded by the National Science Foundation grant DMS-1646385.
