Description of the San Pedro Necta variant (Translated from the above)
The municipality of San Pedro Necta is characterized by its rich culture, which is manifested in the traditional clothing of men and women, its gastronomy, as well as its customs and traditions. A central element of this identity is the Mam language, which continues to be a fundamental means of communication within families and communities, strengthening social relationships and harmonious coexistence.
The Mam language, widely spoken in various municipalities of the department of Huehuetenango, has its own variant in San Pedro Necta, distinguished by phonetic and pronunciation characteristics. This variant is recognized for its delicate articulation of sounds and, especially, for the predominant use of the phoneme represented as “ch”.
Unlike other neighboring municipalities, such as Santiago Chimaltenango, Colotenango, San Rafael Petzal, and some communities in the municipality of La Democracia, where a greater presence of sounds closer to“k” or “ky,” in San Pedro Necta, a softer pronunciation is maintained with the use of "ch". This phonetic difference constitutes one of the most notable distinctive features of its variant.
For example, this variant uses words like chaqil o cha’j, in contrast to other regions where these same terms may exhibit phonetic variations with stronger or guttural sounds. This feature is also shared with other municipalities such as San Gaspar Ixchil and Todos Santos Cuchumatán, where the use of "ch" is characteristic of their speech patterns.
From a sociolinguistic perspective, the San Pedro Necta variant reflects its own historical and cultural processes, shaped by both its geographical environment and interactions with neighboring communities. These differences do not represent a hierarchy among variants, but rather demonstrate the diversity and internal richness of the Mam language.
Likewise, the municipal context influences the use and development of the language. San Pedro Necta is a productive region, especially known for its coffee cultivation and warm climate, conditions that also affect the vocabulary and cultural practices of its inhabitants.
Currently, it is estimated that a significant portion of the population speaks the Mam language, coexisting with the use of Spanish. This situation reflects bilingualism, which, while expanding communicative possibilities, also poses challenges for the intergenerational transmission of the [Mam] language.
In this regard, the importance of valuing, preserving, and promoting the Mam language as an essential element of cultural identity is recognized. Strengthening its use, especially among younger generations, is fundamental to ensuring its continuity as a living means of communication and as a legacy from our ancestors.
