Summer 2025 I interned at Level Engineering Inc, the design and manufacturing hub for LandScan's Digital Soil Core technology. The Digital Soil Core is an in-ground soil sensing probe with seven different sensors that digitally measures physical and chemical soil properties continuously without traditional lab sampling. It enables rapid, repeatable soil characterization that can improve understanding of soil health, optimize irrigation and crop management, and support precision agriculture and digital twin modeling far more effectively than conventional core samples.
My role on the team was in several different areas. I refurbished and calibrated probes that had been damaged in the field; I repaired all parts of the probes, including custom PCBs, camera lenses, and fiber optics for NIR spectroscopy. I also worked on the bobcat-mounted rig that deploys the probes. I designed and tested new hydraulic routing and implemented check valves to fix stability issues the rig was experiencing in hard/clay soil.
