Part 1: Setting Up Your Column

Obtain 10 mL of ethyl acetate in your graduated cylinder, and add 6 mL of this to the silica. Swirl the beaker to mix, then quickly pour the slurry into the column. Open the stopcock to let the solvent drain.

This video shows a student make a silica/ethyl acetate slurry, pours this into the column, and opens the stopcock. Solvent slowly drips out.

Rinse the beaker with 1 mL of ethyl acetate, pouring the rinse onto the column.

This video shows a student rinse the sides of the beaker with 1 m L of ethyl acetate and pours this into the column. Solvent continues to drip from the bottom of the column.
