Google is a way to find the answer to your question. But what happens when it finds something you don't want to know?. That’s what happened to me when I was working on a history project. I was supposed to look for my grandmothers’ family tree and I went on ancestry.com I found that most of the kids in her family went missing at some point in time and were all last seen in the same spot. The willow tree. I decided to ask my grandma if she had any more siblings other than her younger sister. She then told me that when she was a kid she had 5 siblings, and that four of them went missing and were not found. I asked why she never told me, and she said that it was because she didn’t want me to worry. I saw her hurt eyes and I knew I had to do something. I decided to look for clues to see who could've taken them.
I decided to see who lived near my grandma and their acquaintances. I then asked my grandma if anything weird was going on when they were all together and she said that it always smelled like worms at around 6 and 7 in the evening. I looked into it and found out that one of her neighbors was a fisher and that worms were commonly used as bait. My heart was thumping out of my chest; I thought I had solved the mystery of who did it.
Suddenly, I heard a thumping on my window. I jumped out of my chair and I heard running. I looked at my window and I found a dirty post it note saying “stop looking.” I immediately called my grandma, but she didn't respond. I got really scared. Nobody was home and it was just me. I heard the door unlock and I heard footsteps coming towards my door. I immediately ran for the closet and hid. I heard the door open and I saw a familiar silhouette and my family tree get taken. The person jumped out my window and I heard a familiar grunt. The person ran off into the woods and my mom came home. I immediately ran to my mom. She looked at me, confused, and just hugged me. I was in tears and I was shaking.
The next day it was raining. The storm made everything muddy and moist. I heard the bell ring and I started to walk home. I took out my umbrella and I felt a presence behind me. I had a very ominous feeling - I couldn't shake it off. I started circling around the neighborhood and this presence was still following me. I ran home and locked all the doors and windows. But I must've forgotten one because I heard the door unlock and footsteps I hid under the gap in my couch and I called the police. When the police came they all started whispering and they then reached for my back and they pulled of a post-it note saying “I was this close.”
The rest of the night, I was terrified. How could someone have gotten behind me so silently and quickly?
It had to be someone who knew us. Someone who knew the house's layout. I knew I had to do something, and fast. I went to my room and felt a hand touch my back. It was my grandma. I told her my discovery and she said that some things are better left unknown.
I brushed it off and I went to school. The school day was miserable. I couldn’t pay attention, much less answer the questions my teacher was asking me. At lunch I went to the computer lab. It was empty as usual. I did some research on the kidnapping cases, but there was no evidence against anybody.
I kept on reading and it stated that the police started to think it was someone they knew because everything seemed perfectly planed out. This person knew their schedules and where they usually went other than school.
I got picked up because after the incident I was to scared to go anywhere without somebody. My mom came into the house with me and she told me that she would have to leave but she would be right back. I was terrified. I started to breakdown and cry. I begged her to stay with me or take me with her. But she told me it was very urgent and she couldn’t do either. She told me that my grandma would be right back, and I reluctantly let her go.
Before leaving, she left me a box of my grandma’s belongings and told me if I wanted to, I could look through them to make me less scared. As I was looking through them, I then noticed that she had been learning fishing and had a great ability at hunting. She knew how to cover up her steps and be extremely silent. At first I thought it was really cool, but the more I looked into it, the creepier it got.
I later found a letter telling her parents that she was really sorry and that they shouldn’t send her away and that she didn't mean to bury her siblings. As I was reading through the letter, I heard the door open. The dampness from outside and the smell of mud floods through the door.
I caught another scent. The worms that are used for bait...shivers go down my spine.
It was her. All along. I start shaking.
My grandma then gets a tighter grip on my shoulder and I yelp in pain. She says, "I told you some things are better left unknown."
I ask her why. She says that she was jealous and that she wanted to be number one in her parents' hearts, and that that wasn’t possible with her siblings ,so she just made them vanish into thin air. I asked why she didn’t do the same with her sister and she said that her sister was born years later and she didn’t care about being number one anymore.
I then asked her what she did to her siblings and why the tree. She said that it was their favorite place to hang out and it was the only reason that they agreed to come out with her. My mom walked in and asked what we are talking about with a smile on her face. My grandmother responded, "school."
It’s been days and I'm worried that she won’t stop looking at me. I hope I'm not next.
