Eighth grade students in advanced art always look forward to the opportunity to paint a block on the wall in the art classroom. These are permanent additions to the classroom and have been a tradition for over 20 years!
Every year the advanced art class creates clay artworks that imitate a food. Students try to match the colors and textures of the actual food as well as bring in the food's packaging to create a convincing replica!
Sixth grade students created their own creatures. Students began by designing their creatures. Numerous students used AI to help them visualize the creature they were designing. Students then worked on bringing their creatures to life by adding shading, texture, and background details as they drew their creature. Many students also wrote about their creatures, writing details such as what their creature's name would be, where they would live, or what they would eat.
Students had the opportunity to create whatever they wanted with their choice of materials. Here are a few of the astounding artworks they created!
Advanced Art students created animal paintings using acrylic paint. Students first cropped a photo of an animal of their choice. They were then given a canvas where they sketched their animal and then painted, making sure to blend paint smoothly and match the colors of their animal.
Seventh and eighth grade students created radial symmetry prints. Students learned about the different types of printmaking as well as some new printmaking vocabulary. Students carved into styrofoam to create their printmaking block which they printed on paper.
Advanced art created sculptures out of cardboard after learning about mandalas. A mandala is a geometric design. In their most basic form, mandalas are circles contained within a square and arranged into sections that are all organized around a single, central point. Mandalas hold a great deal of symbolism in a variety of cultures. Students also learned about balance, symmetry, asymmetry, and radial symmetry.
Sixth grade students learned about the color wheel, gradients, and silhouettes as they created their own tempera paintings of deer.
Students examined cardinal prints created by the artist Charley Harper. Students then created cardinal collages inspired by the simplified shapes and colors used by the artist. Students started by painting paper before assembling all their pieces of their collage.
Every year the advanced art class creates gingerbread houses before winter break. Check out some of their amazing houses!
Students in the eighth grade art class created abstract paintings using a paint pouring technique.
For this month's sketchbook, students had to draw something they were thankful for.
We have a variety of artworks in the display case at school! Advanced Art students created puppets using sewing materials and a sock. Students also created abstract mixed media paintings which can be seen in the background.
Seventh and eighth grade students created winter tempera paintings after learning about the color wheel, gradients, tints, and shades.
Advanced Art students were given a book at the beginning of the year to repurpose and create into an art journal. Check out their progress so far!

Students started out by setting up a still life and drawing their shoe. Students then had to redesign their shoe to resemble a candy of their choice, using colors and images to make their candy recognizable.
Sixth grade students created self-portraits in the style of Tim Burton! Students learned about shading and how to use light and dark values on toned paper.

Notan refers to a Japanese principle of design related to light and dark. Students took this concept and designed thier own collages using construction paper!
