HUGE NIGHT @ STIFEL FOR BHS


30th Anual Student Art Exhibition at Ogelbay Art Institute's Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling is one of the biggest art events of the year for young artists in the Ohio Valley. Each high school can enter up to thirty of their best pieces. This year was jurored by John Blumen, a well known illustrator from Pittsburgh, PA. He chose 19 pieces, from 12 different students from Bellaire High School to be included in this years exhibition. Students competed for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and honorable mention in the categories of drawing, photography, multi-media and video, painting, and 3-D sculpture. There are three grand prizes that are "BEST IN SHOW' , a scholarship to West Virginia University, and a scholarship to West Liberty University. It is a great honor to be part of the show. This is Bellaire High School's fourth year in competing. The following student's work was chosen to represent BEllaire High School; Collin Anistasia, Brittany Falcone, Michaela Flaherty, Abigail Garner, Lindsay Hess, Kaleb Hicks, Andrea Perrie, Cierra McCorkle, Nicole McCorkle, Jaya Reed, Emilee Mehl, and Allison Wise.

The show will remain up until February 15th. It is free and open to the public. Please come out and see some of the creative talents of Bellaire students!

A Trip to the Farm

Advanced Art and Advanced Clay enjoy a fall field trip to Simmon's Farm. Students will be introduced to subtractive sculpture with a pumpkin carving contest. Be on the watch for some spooktacular art!

BHS Photography Class Welcomes Artist Rebecca Kiger

Rebecca Kiger is a documentary and portrait photographer living in West Virginia. Rebecca studied at Shepherd College in WV and finished a degree in photography, education and anti-racism work at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. She has a second degree in Spanish and Latin American studies from UMass Amherst. Her work has been published on the Lens blog, TIME magazine, Everyday Rural America, Looking at Appalachia, and 100 Days in Appalachia. In 2018 she received the Edward R Murrow Award for Excellence in Video. Her still photography work is a component of two Netflix films by Elaine McMillion Sheldon about the opioid crisis. Rebecca also has photography work in Red Roll Red by Nancy Schwartzman, a documentary about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Additionally, she is the photographer for the project Her Appalachia, a companion piece to the upcoming documentary film Hillbilly, which addresses the role media archetypes play in women’s lives. Rebecca has been selected to be a 'Teaching Artist’ through the Rural Arts Collaborative (RAC) for the next academic year at Bellaire High School. Her ongoing personal projects are centered around themes that explore the challenges of living in rural communities in Puerto Rico, central Missouri and Athens, Ohio.

MadFest 2018 !!

Art Field Trip to

Stifel Fine Arts Center

BHS students participated in a matting workshop at Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling. Students learned the matting procedure and framed their own pieces. Materials were provided through Stifel/ Cline grant. By participating in the workshop students also earned a waiver to enter in the Student exhibit in January.

Congratulations to junior Rachel Richmond!! Rachel's design was selected (by BHS staff) to be featured on the BHS snow plow for the ODOT District 11 Paint a plow project. The theme is superheros. Advanced artists have been working hard on bringing Rachel's design to life. The 11 foot painted plow will be featured on ODOT's facebook page and in the Bellaire Christmas Parade.
