Now that you have mastered the fundamentals of 3D modeling, it is time to apply your skills to a complex, real-world design challenge. For your final project, you will design a complete, print-ready 3D model using Tinkercad's advanced toolset. Your design can be a functional product, a multi-part mechanical assembly, an architectural structure, or an intricate detailed object.
Advanced Technical Execution:
Efficiently utilize advanced Tinkercad features, including:
Workplane Adjustments for angled or surface-level modeling.
Align & Smart Duplicate (Ctrl+D) for repeating or symmetrical features.
Custom Shape Generators and multi-shape grouping/ungrouping.
Precision Hole/Cutout Tools to create interlocking joints, hollow cavities, or precise fitments.
Scale & Dimensional Precision:
All measurements must be intentional and accurate.
Model components must maintain consistent real-world proportions relative to one another.
3D Print Readiness:
Your design must be manifold/watertight (no floating parts disconnected from the main body).
Consider real-world printing constraints: keep wall thickness adequate (>1.5mm recommended) and minimize extreme overhangs where possible.
Project Documentation & Submission:
Rename your Tinkercad file using the format: LastName_FirstName_FinalProject.
Write a Design Statement (100–150 words) in your project description box answering:
What is your design, and what problem or idea does it solve/represent?
What was the most challenging feature to create, and how did you overcome it?
Advanced Tinkercad 3D Design Rubric (100 Points Total)
1. Technical Mastery & Tool Use (20 Points)
Exemplary (18–20 pts): Masterfully utilizes advanced Tinkercad tools (Grouping, Align, Smart Duplicate, Hole tools, Workplane adjustment, and Shape Generators). All shapes fit seamlessly without unintended gaps or overlapping geometry errors.
Proficient (14–17 pts): Effective use of advanced Tinkercad tools. Minor alignment or grouping issues present, but overall structure is solid and well-constructed.
Developing (10–13 pts): Basic tool usage demonstrated. Noticeable issues with alignment, floating shapes, or improper grouping/cutting.
Beginning (0–9 pts): Minimal understanding of tools. Shapes are loosely placed or improperly grouped, rendering the design structurally flawed.
2. Dimensional Accuracy & Scale (20 Points)
Exemplary (18–20 pts): Precise measurements and proper scaling applied to all components. Proportions are realistic and accurate relative to intended design requirements.
Proficient (14–17 pts): Dimensions and scale are mostly accurate with minor proportional inconsistencies that do not affect the overall design intent.
Developing (10–13 pts): Significant scaling errors; proportions off, making the model visually unbalanced or non-functional.
Beginning (0–9 pts): Disregard for scale, dimensions, or precise measurements.
3. Design Complexity & Detailing (20 Points)
Exemplary (18–20 pts): Project demonstrates high effort with complex geometry, custom-built components, intricate features, and layered shape manipulation going beyond basic primitive shapes.
Proficient (14–17 pts): Good level of complexity and detail. Incorporates multiple shape interactions beyond standard primitives.
Developing (10–13 pts): Simple design relying mostly on unaltered primitive shapes with minimal added complexity or detail.
Beginning (0–9 pts): Bare minimum effort; extremely basic shapes with little to no modification or detail.
4. Functionality & Printability (20 Points)
Exemplary (18–20 pts): Model is fully print-ready (no floating parts, watertight geometry, appropriate wall thickness, and proper overhang consideration for FDM 3D printing).
Proficient (14–17 pts): Model is mostly print-ready; may require minor adjustments or support structure tweaks before printing.
Developing (10–13 pts): Model has critical 3D printing flaws (e.g., floating elements, non-manifold geometry, walls too thin).
Beginning (0–9 pts): Model cannot be 3D printed due to major structural or geometric errors.
5. Design Documentation & Presentation (20 Points)
Exemplary (18–20 pts): Includes a clear project description, well-named parts/layers, proper view presentation, and a brief reflection or design statement explaining choices.
Proficient (14–17 pts): Includes description and reasonable presentation, though naming or reflection details may be brief.
Developing (10–13 pts): Incomplete documentation or lacking clear presentation of the final design.
Beginning (0–9 pts): No documentation, context, or explanation provided with the project submission.
