Guidance for Recognition: Days, Months, and Cultural Observances

Days and Months of Recognition

It is in the spirit of respect, equity, and inclusion that we invite the BSD students, staff and community members to acknowledge Days and Months of Recognition. On such days and during such months, our schools may review lessons and/or materials that highlight historic and contemporary figures and events, use inclusive and culturally relevant curriculum, and continue with year-long efforts to create a respectful and inclusive community that teaches students to recognize and celebrate diversity, resist stereotypes and discrimination and engage in the collective efforts toward liberty and justice for all.

As is the case for all BSD curriculum and instruction, lessons and activities used to acknowledge and celebrate Days and Months of Recognition are aligned to learning targets and developmentally appropriate. As per Board Policy IIA when supplemental materials are used to support learning and activities, educators will let families know in advance to engage in transparent communication and encourage engagement in the home and community.

Cultural Observances

In recognition and celebration of the rich cultural diversity that exists within the students, families and staff of the Beaverton School District, we encourage the acknowledgment and education around Cultural Observances. Beaverton School Board Educational Equity Policy JBB ensures that students have the opportunity to experience the inclusion of their various cultural identities in their learning experience, as well as the use of culturally relevant strategies to inform, guide and sustain their learning.

Religious Observances

BSD Policy IGACA ensures respect of opinion and tolerance for the religious beliefs of people in our community. "It is accepted that no religious belief or non-belief should be promoted by the district or its employees and none should be disparaged. Instead the district should encourage all students and staff members to appreciate and be tolerant of each other's religious views...The district recognizes that one of its educational goals is to advance the students’ knowledge and appreciation of the role that our religious heritage has played in the social, cultural and historical development of civilization."

As an inclusive district, we foster understanding and mutual respect among our community members. Students are able to follow their religious observances thorough the school year. Our schools mention or recognize religious observances in their newsletters, morning messages, and are aware of students' academic accommodations as needed, such as being able to make up work when absent from school due to religious observances.
