Assigned reading, problems and ChemThinks

Chapter 1: What is Chemistry?

RAT over sections 1.2 and 1.3 as well as the ChemThink: Particulate Nature of Matter

Book problems to do to prepare for the chapter 1 RAT: Workpatch 1.1 and Practice problems 1.1-1.10 Due the day of the chapter 1 RAT

Even if you have completed the ChemThink once, you can always go back and redo the tutorial and/or the questions for extra study.

Chapter 1 covers types of matter, chemical and physical properties and chemical and physical changes. The state of Ohio expects you to be familiar with these concepts already, so we will not spend significant time in this chapter.

Chapter 2: The Numerical Side of Chemistry

RAT over sections 2.1, 2.4 (but not uncertainty), 2.6 (p. 44-46: SI units, mass vs. weight and the Greek prefixes milli, centi, and kilo) and 2.9.

Do not worry about the discussion on temperature p. 48-49 or the difference between intensive and extensive properties in 2.7, p. 52.

Read section 2.1 and do PP 2.1 - 2.3 Due the day of the chapter 2 RAT

Read section 2.4 and do PP 2.10-2.15 and WP 2.3 Due the day of the chapter 2 RAT

Read section 2.6

Read section 2.9 and do PP 2.47 - 2.49 Due the day of the chapter 2 RAT

Chapter 3: The Evolution of Atomic Theory

Remember: Reading the book & doing the book problems can be a good study technique even if I do not assign the problems.

RAT over sections 3.1 - 3.3 and ChemThink: Atomic Structure due the day of the Ch. 3 RAT

Section 3.1: WP 3.1, PP 3.4 - 3.6 due the day of the Ch. 3 RAT

Section 3.3: WP 3.2 due the day of the Ch. 3 RAT

ChemThink: Isotopes due

ChemThink: Ions due

Chapter 4: The Modern Model of the Atom

Chapter 5: Chemical Bonding and Nomenclature

Remember: Reading the book & doing the book problems can be a good study technique even if I do not assign the problems.

You MUST have the polyatomic ions memorized by the end of chapter five!

ChemThink: Ionic Bonding and Ionic Formulas

ChemThink: Covalent Bonding

Answers: More ionic bonding fun

Chapter 6: The Shape of Molecules

Section 6.1 and 6.2: Read it!

ChemThink: Molecular Shapes

Section 6.4: Read it!

Chapter 7: Intermolecular Forces and the Phases of Matter

Remember: Reading the book & doing the book problems can be a good study technique even if I do not assign the problems.

Section 7.5: Read it!

Chapter 8: Chemical Reactions

Remember: Reading the book & doing the problems can be a good study technique even if I do not assign the problems since the answers are in the book. WorkPatch answers are at the end of the chapter and Practice Problem answers are at the end of the book.

ChemThink: Chemical Reactions

Answers Ch. 8 review

Chapter 9: Stoichiometry and the Mole

This chapter may be split in two. Pay Attention!

If split, the first section (Moles) will cover sections 9.2, 9.5 and 9.6.

The second section (Stoichiometry) will cover sections 9.1, 9.3 & 9.4.

Chapter 10: The Transfer of Electrons from One Atom to Another in a Chemical Reaction

Table of Standard Electrode Potentials

Chapter 11: What If There Were No Intermolecular Forces? The Ideal Gas

ChemThink: Behavior of Gases

End of chapter problems due the day of the chapter 11 test: P. 441: #18, 29-33, 48, 52, 55, 58, 60, 63, 68, 70 and 71.

Chapter 12: Solutions

Remember: Reading the book & doing the book problems can be a good study technique even if I do not assign the problems.

Skip titrations p. 470-473 for now. We will cover titrations when we discuss acids and bases.

Chapter 13: When Reactants Turn Into Products

Read sections 13.1, 13.3 & 13.4,

Chapter 14: Equilibrium

Chapter 15: Electrolytes, Acids and Bases
