Jazz Lab FAQ

What is the Jazz Lab and how many people are in it?

The Coy Jazz Lab is an open group - you do not have to audition and there is no limit to how many students can participate! This group will work on music in a variety of styles including swing, latin, rock, and funk. The jazz lab will focus on jazz standards as well as modern hits and helps students learn the basics of jazz improvisation. Unlike jazz band, any instrument can be in jazz lab - this includes flutes, oboes, bassoons, french horns, etc. Students who are learning guitar, bass, drumset, or piano at home are also invited to play that instrument in jazz lab. Jazz lab is open to 7th and 8th grade students. Additionally 6th graders who show a lot of progress on their instrument during the fall/winter can be invited to participate in Jazz Lab during the spring.

When does Jazz Lab rehearse and when will rehearsals starts?

The Coy Jazz Lab rehearses before school on Friday mornings from 7:30am to 8:30am.

What is the difference between Jazz Band and Jazz Lab?

While both groups will be learning similar skills and music, there are a few differences. First, you must audition for Jazz Band while you just have to sign up to do Jazz Lab. Additionally, the Jazz Band will be working on music to perform on a concert. Jazz Lab will cover more music but less in-depth - the primary focus in this group isn't necessarily a final concert but helping students learn more about jazz music and how to play it.

Can I do both Jazz Band and Jazz Lab?

Yes! In fact, we highly recommend it. Students who are interested in Jazz Band should try to participate in Jazz Lab - this is a great way to help them prepare for their audition and brush up on their jazz skills. Jazz Band auditions will take place in November and that group will begin rehearsing in December. If a student doesn't make Jazz Band, they can still participate in Jazz Lab. Additionally, a student who did make Jazz Band can still come to Jazz Lab to help build their jazz chops even more!
