2020 BCSD Emergency Updates

update 3/30/20 4:45 p.m.

On Friday, the Governor issued an updated directive for all Utah communities. To comply with this directive, we are directing all schools to further minimize the amount of people working in our buildings. This includes no further meetings for small group work or gatherings of any kind as well as advising all staff to work from home whenever possible. School buildings will be locked. Minimal staff will be in the front office to answer phones. Contact the school to make appointments. Meals will still be available. Teachers can be reached via-email. This directive is in place through April 13th.

Buildings will be shutdown for all general access. Food services, administration, and custodial will still need to be minimally in buildings to provide meals, complete maintenance, and organize staff and student home activities. We are also blocking all entrances into non-essential areas such as weight rooms, playgrounds, gymnasiums, and auditoriums.

Coping with School from Home

Here is a helpful guide from the Utah State Board of Education and the Utah State Health Department. Sections have been highlighted showing some of the items addressed by the school district and items we should all be considering as we go through an extended school closure.

SCHOOL CLOSED UNTIL MAY 1, 2020: Preparing for the Long Haul

Parents and students, administrators and teachers were encouraged to start preparing for an additional two weeks of school closures. The official announcement from the Governor came late this afternoon that schools will be closed until May 1, 2020 and possibly until the end of the school year. We will spend this week refining our lessons to make learning during this closure as effective as possible.

Also, aides and teachers have been asked to check in with students and even provide tutoring sessions when possible. If your son or daughter is struggling with an assignment, please reach out to the teacher right away through an email or a response on Google Classroom or Canvas. Teachers will arrange tutoring sessions through Zoom with themselves or an aide. Teachers and aides are being encouraged to record these Zoom meetings to help as a tutorial for other students in the class as well.

Two additional announcements are below.

Beaver County School District Household Free Meal Request Form

School Meals

We are encouraged by the participation in school meals. The district served over 1,000 meals today! Keep sending in those request forms and look for updates.

update 3/23/20 4:45 p.m.

Special Education

We have been providing some special education classes at the school during this closure. There are many risks associated with providing these services at the school. We will be transitioning to online school for special education students this week and no students will be entering school buildings during the closure starting next week.

update 3/20/2020 4:00 p.m.

Launch Day

Thank you to all who helped out with school breakfast and lunch today! By opening up meals to all Beaver County children and youth 18 and younger we were able to serve a considerable number of our young people.

Teachers published their online lessons at all schools today. I saw great material published, some student work already submitted, and even some successful video conferencing lessons through Zoom today. Hats off to our staff who are making all of this possible. In the coming week we will be focusing on student learning by checking in with students, monitoring progress they are making in the published lessons, and developing assessments that will help teachers and parents know how students are doing.

There seems to be some confusion about accessing buildings. Just a reminder, buildings are closed. Students and community members should not be in schools or offices unless specifically invited. Help us comply with state and CDC guidelines that promote social distancing and have the greatest chance of minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

Have a great weekend! DO SOMETHING FUN OUTSIDE, BUT NOT IN GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE!!!

In Beaver County School District practices have been canceled over spring break, but will resume on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
