My name is Elise Feller, and I am a senior in the Jackson Academy for Global Studies at Jackson High School with a passion for science, language learning, and foreign diplomacy. Through my courses, community service hours, and international travel opportunities, I have explored many different perspectives on life.
As a student in JAGS, I have had the opportunity to travel the world, learn valuable leadership skills, and make lasting memories that will guide me in the future. During my junior and senior years, I became very involved in Model United Nations, which has made a positive impact on my communication, teamwork, and diplomacy skills. I also learned how to see the world from someone else's perspective and to cultivate more empathy for others.
I was also given the opportunity in March 2023 to become a Youth Ambassador for the Tourette Association of America. In this role, I was able to talk to members of Congress and the Senate to continue funding the research of such a misunderstood neurodevelopmental disorder, as well as support a bill making necessary medications more affordable.
Today, I continue to educate people of all ages on Tourette's Syndrome, its effects on the patient's brain, and how to advocate for themselves and others.
For my senior capstone project, I worked with the First Ladies National Historic Site in Canton to recatalog and take inventory of their sixth-floor library. This library is home to over 900 books for volunteers and staff to read. The staff uses their knowledge from these books to directly serve the Canton community through educational opportunities. When I started this project, the site was completely unaware of the books they had. This made the library unfunctional, increasing the need for education in the community. Therefore, I took it upon myself to spend a few months taking inventory of every book in stock. I also reorganized all the shelves, created a new organizational system for the library, and made the project accessible for new volunteers if any changes are needed. I am extremely pleased with how the project turned out and could not think of a better way to help my community.
After high school, I plan on studying biochemistry on the premedical track and continuing studies in Mandarin at Wellesley College. I hope to use the skills I learned in JAGS to enhance my postsecondary education, as well as in my future career in the medical field.
