League of Nations Packet
3rd Quarter/2019
Mr. MarLett
Freshman Year- World History - Recognize Perspectives - Explains various perspectives or interpretations of a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, and reflects an understanding of different contexts, such as access to knowledge, technology, or resources.
The artifact that I have chosen for my JAGS freshman world history course is a very lengthy packet that we did about the League of Nations. This packet was handed to us by Mr. MarLett upon the start of our League of Nations unit, which if I remember correctly lasted multiple weeks. The packet contained various different scenarios faced by countries around the world during the formation of the League of Nations, and we were put into the position of other countries to make decisions from their point of view. The ISSN domain that I believe fits best with this artifact is “Recognize Perspectives,” with an honorable mention going to “Investigate the World” as this could have applied as well. This matches the “Recognize Perspectives” domain very well because after we were assigned a country, we would make decisions on global issues as if we were those countries, taking into account the circumstances that they were in and what their needs were following World War II. We learned to be able to work as a group to put ourselves in the shoes of other nations during a time of recovery that was difficult for countries around the world.
The purpose of the assignment was to learn about the League of Nations in an interactive way. We were handed one of Mr. MarLett’s signature world history packets containing 32 different decisions that were faced by a number of nations after the end of World War II. We used these packets to take notes on the different issues and then make decisions from a list of options on what our group choses based on what our country is, what we think the League of Nations decided on, and what we selected as a class. Correct answers earned us points which eventually decided a winning team. This was a great way for us to learn about the League of Nations and learn how to recognize perspectives because of the fun and interactive nature of the activity.
This fun and informational packet from my freshmen JAGS world history class demonstrated global competency because I was assigned a country, which in my case was France, and analyzed different global issues from a French perspective. This helped me start to be able to recognize different issues and possible solutions from perspectives that are different than my own. I believe that this is a very important skill that will help me in any career that I go into because recognizing other perspectives is very important, whether it’s the perspectives of other nations approximately 75 years ago or the perspectives of others around you. This was one of the first things that I did in the JAGS program that really sparked an interest in recognizing the perspectives of others, which shows how this has helped me grow a lot as a JAGS student. I now really enjoy looking at global issues from other perspectives, which led to lots of other fun JAGS experiences such as the Heifer Global Village trip.
