Junior Year - College Composition 1 - Investigate the World - Selects and uses a variety of international and domestic sources to identify and weigh the most important evidence that addresses a global question.
The artifact that I have selected for my junior year English reflection is a research paper that I wrote towards the end of last semester on the sustainability of the fan ownership model in professional sports. This project required me to use all of my research skills to write a ten page paper on the sustainability of those fan ownership models. We were required to use a number of different types of sources, such as journal articles, credible news sources, videos, interviews, and more to support our research question. I have found the “Investigate the World” ISSN domain to apply the most to this assignment, though “Communicate Ideas” could have worked just as well. However, I will be focusing on the former. I had to use this large variety of sources which I stated previously to explore this topic and explain how sustainable different types of fan ownership are around the world. I used these sources to investigate this in multiple countries and leagues around the world to look at these unique ownership structures on a global scale.
There were not many guidelines to this assignment. We were instructed to write a research paper about a topic of our choice as one of our last and largest papers of the semester for my college composition class. While I do not remember the exact word count, I believe it was around 2,250 words, with mine coming in at 2,930. Like I mentioned before, my paper looked at different types of fan ownership structures in professional sports, coming to the conclusion that it is a very effective and sustainable way to run a professional sports team and increase fan viewership and engagement. I looked specifically at smaller European soccer teams and their ownership structures, as well as some soccer leagues that require fans to have majority control of teams and examples of this outside of Europe and in sports such as baseball and American football. Like previously mentioned, I concluded that all of these different factors contributed to my decision to claim that fan ownership is indeed a sustainable way to run a professional sports team.
This research paper that I wrote in my college composition class demonstrates global competency because I was able to use my research project that could have been about anything to look at how something like sports ownership works on a global scale. I used my research skills to find journal articles and news articles, many of which were from other countries around the world such as England, to support my claim. Since a large portion of my sources came from outside of the US, which is something that I haven’t done for many projects before this, I was able to improve my researching skills to get a better understanding of how to find credible international sources, which I believe will make me a more globally competent citizen. Being able to apply these skills to a big project like this is a good skill to have and I have learned a lot that will help me with assignments going forward.
