Hands On Sports Foundation Volunteer Work
September 21 (1st Quarter/2020)
Extra-Curricular (No Teacher)
Junior Year - Extra-Curricular Activity - Take Action - Acts individually or collaboratively to execute a plan that is culturally responsive, and strongly likely to improve a local, regional, and/or global situation, and assesses the impact of the action.
The artifact that I have selected for my junior year extracurricular activity is a set of pictures that were taken at the Hands On Sports Foundation's annual golf outing, which I volunteered at. Hands On Sports Foundation is a foundation that was created by a close friend of mine, Otto Orf, who played professional soccer and futsal for 21 years and now coaches the Akron Vulcans and the US National Futsal Team. The purpose of the foundation is to give at-risk youth an opportunity to experience soccer in a positive environment filled with education and opportunity. They have also started to raise money to donate medical supplies to areas that are at-risk and have been impacted by natural disasters. I have labelled this volunteer opportunity as fitting under the “Take Action” ISSN domain. I chose to volunteer at the foundation’s annual golf outing because I was able to make an impact by taking action. Hands On Sports Foundation takes action every day to help deliver medical supplies and support at-risk kids through soccer, and I wanted to help out with making sure that one of their biggest fundraisers of the year goes smoothly.
The golf outing took place at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Streetsboro. I helped all of the staff and volunteers there set up all of the tables, chairs, banners, and other equipment that needed to be set up before the event started. As the event started, I sat down at the front desk and was in charge of checking people in, working the cash register for those who had not paid in advance, handing out shirts, and informing people of their assigned golf cart. During the event, I helped deliver food from the food truck to the tables on the golf course and helped with the distribution of that food. The attached pictures are ones of me before the event, and the other is a picture of one of the food tables that we were setting up. I really enjoyed being able to volunteer for this foundation and we were able to raise a lot of money to put toward the goals of the foundation.
Taking action at events like this can demonstrate global competency because volunteer work is vital to many goals, whether they are smaller like this one, or large like the UN Sustainable Development goals. Volunteering is very important as it plays a large role in helping things get done and giving assistance to people, groups, or organizations in need. Like I mentioned before, this doesn’t always have to be on a global scale like the UNSDGs would be, but small volunteer acts can help contribute to one of those larger goals in a local way. This is why I believe that volunteering at places such as Hands On Sports Foundation has helped me become more of a global citizen. I really enjoyed this event and I look forward to doing it again.
