Reform Attempts in the Progressive Era Project
February 23 (3rd Quarter/2020)
Mr. Taray
Sophomore Year - AP US History - Investigate the World - Selects and uses multiple international and domestic sources to identify relevant evidence that addresses a global question.
The artifact that I have selected from my sophomore year history class is the reform attempts in the progressive era assignment that we did in APUSH. This assignment required us to pair up with a partner to take a number of different documents and sources related to progressive era reform and analyze them. We then had to put them into multiple different categories which include social justice, efficiency, democracy, and regulation. The ISSN domain that matches up with this assignment best is “Investigate the World.” By taking numerous different sources, including images, documents, and texts, we investigated a different part of our nation's history that played a vital role in shaping the United States today. Not only did we have to categorize these different documents but we also had to provide analysis in each category which required a deep understanding and a lot of research in these topic areas, which further proves why this clearly represents the ISSN domain of investigating the world.
Mr. Taray instructed us to pick a partner or small group for this assignment. He then shared a document with us that was full of different artifacts, documents, images and graphs from the progressive time era, as well as a template for this assignment. We were instructed to take these artifacts, explain each one, and put them in the correct progressive goal category. The four categories, as mentioned earlier, included social justice, efficiency, democracy, and regulation. Some of the artifacts that we were required to investigate and sort were related to child labor, standard of living, population increase, land regulation and corruption. Investigating these issues was very important to be able to understand the time period, and many of these issues are still present in today's society.
The grade that we received on the assignment demonstrated global competency because we were successfully able to analyze issues that occurred in society many years ago. Most if not all of these issues can be tied to things that still happen in the US today, as well as globally. While completing this assignment in the third quarter of my sophomore year, I put a lot of thought and a little bit of research into where in the world we still see these issues. It is also interesting to look at these different acts of progressive reform to see how they have held up over time and how much lasting change they have had in the US and beyond. I believe that this has contributed in making me more of a global citizen and it demonstrates my growth so far as a JAGS student.
