Class Objective: To enhancing historical thinking

How do historians determine what happened in the past?

During this year, students will learn about how past events and people helped shape the world we live in. Students will discover how different periods in history affected progress today. The study of world history helps students gain a better understanding of the events that have shaped our world, understand current world issues and how they relate to each other. My social studies curriculum for 7th grade will also incorporate reading and writing to help students develop their literacy skills even further.

About me

My name is Keith Wise. I have been teaching for 14 years. This year is my 8th year at Leland Middle School. Prior to teaching at Leland Middle school, I taught 9th grade world history and coached football at New Hanover High school.

I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a B.A. in history. I also studied abroad at the University of the West Indies in Barbados.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy working out, walking my dogs and gardening. I have two children, Keiley 17 and Mikko 15.

My Educational Philosophy

Every teacher has beliefs about learning that influence his/her teaching practices and classroom environment. For me, I believe that every student has a right to learn in a safe and productive environment. An environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking. I believe that it’s my job as an educator to know my students’ strengths and weaknesses, and challenge them exactly where they need to grow without pushing them over the edge. By the end of the school year, it is my goal that students leave feeling accomplished and proud of their experience in my classroom. With a positive attitude and a willing spirit, students can accomplish anything they set their mind to in life.
