How and when teachers plan has a significant impact on student learning outcomes. In fact, according to Hattie, planning and prediction has a 0.76 effect size. Effective teachers plan and deliver structured lessons which incorporate a series of clear steps and transitions. Throughout the learning segments teachers scaffold learning to build students' knowledge and skills.
Lesson planning structures should map the relationship between teaching and learning in class. Lesson planning structures should include:
Reinforcement of class routines and thinking routines
Scaffolding (sequencing) of skills and content
Pacing/timing to optimize time on task and smooth transitions
Planned sequencing of teaching and learning activites to maintain engagement.

Templates are simply graphic organizers that help us organize our ideas. This is ONE template that was heavily influenced by the work presented by Learning Focused.
Big Idea: The PROCESS is more important than the TEMPLATE. Follow the Lesson Planning Process and use this template if it works for your brain!
PLC Practices for Planning
PLC Practices to Enhance Collaborative Planning Include:
Norms, Structures, Routines and Schedules
Opportunities for Short range planning (Lesson Planning, Assessment Analysis
Opportunities for Long range planning (Unit Planning, Curriculum Mapping,
The BIG 4 - DuFour questions:
What do we want our students to LEARN? (Standards Analysis)
Did they learn it? (Assessment Data Analysis)
They didn't learn it... What now? (Plan for re-teaching or intervention)
They learned it... What now? (Plan for next concept or extension of learning)
2 Types of PLCs
Step 1: What do we want our students to learn? Begin with the Standards (Discuss the standard, unpacking documents, key vocabulary, etc)
Step 2: How will we know they learned it?
Design the assessment(s) - formative and summative that align with the learning goals.
Step 3: How will they learn it?
Scaffold and design the learning segments that align with the learning goals. Remember best practices include: differentiation, critical thinking and problem-solving, HOT questions, literacy skills, 21st Century Skills AND Summarizing!
Step 1: Bring your data already!
Collaboratively examine agreed upon data sources from your Planning PLC. Identify patterns, successes and growth opportunities.
Step 2: Develop and Intervention Plan
Develop an intervention plan for students that have not met the learning goals successfully. How many students need re-teaching? Who will lead the process? How will it differ from the original lesson?
Step 3: Develop an Enrichment Plan
Develop an enrichment plan for students that have met the learning goals successfully. How can they go deeper? Who will lead the process? Student expectations?
