My name is Ryan Tomes and I've been teaching in the math department at Clyde A. Erwin High School since 2020. I graduated from Tuscola High School in 2004 before joining the United States Marine Corps where I served until 2009. I attended University of North Carolina at Asheville and graduated in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in pure mathematics.

I was inspired to teach while attending college. I found work as a tutor while completing my bachelor's degree and found the work so impactful and gratifying that I decided to pursue a career in education. I'm a firm believer that if you do what you love, then you'll never work a day in your life. I embrace this ideal every day in my classroom, where I strive to be both an impactful roll model and leader to our future generation. I recognize that many students struggle with mathematics above all other subjects, and I make it my personal goal to help guide them through their challenges and hopefully ease their apprehensions around obstacles and difficulties.

Within my classroom I try to keep all things logistically simple, using only Google Classroom for lesson content and assignments. All assessments (quizzes and tests) are completed using Formative.com.

My focus on classroom management revolves around the principles of respect and integrity. My expectation for all students is that they be respectful to myself, fellow students and staff, and all students can expect the same from myself. I maintain a zero-tolerance policy pertaining to both respect and integrity, particularly pertaining dishonesty and cheating. I expect all of my students to invest in their own education as much as I do, and I'm happy to say that I've never had to fail a student who managed to do so.

I hope the information I've provided is helpful to your understanding of myself and what to expect as one of your child's educators. I look forward to working with each of you and your students as we embark on another year at Erwin High School.
