Go Heels!
I am currently a 5th grade math and science teacher. Enka Intermediate is a wonderful place to be! I have been teaching in Western North Carolina since 2010. I grew up in the piedmont, and went to UNC Chapel Hill to get my degree in Elementary Education. After teaching for a couple of years in Asheville, I moved to Nashville, TN to get a Master's Degree in Reading Education from Vanderbilt University. Since then, I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.
5th grade is a very exciting year where a lot of growth happens. It is jam packed with new learning! At Enka, we take pride in showing empathy, integrity, and self-control. Displaying these character traits is just as important as mastering new content.
I am so excited to be teaching at EIS because it's in the community where I live. I have a husband and two sons, ages 4 and 2. When I'm not at school, I'm trying to keep up with them! We love reading, playing outside, and cooking.
Math
In math, we will build on the content taught in previous grades. We will also explore brand new concepts like the Order of Operations and Volume. Students are able to succeed with math when it is taught conceptually and hands-on. My goal is to get all students thinking. Here is a general outline of the year:
Quarter 1: Graphing & Patterns, Multiplication & Division (review), Volume, Order of Operations
Quarter 2: Multiplying & Dividing Fractions, Understanding Decimal Place Value
Quarter 3: Adding & Subtracting Decimals and Fractions, Multiplying & Dividing Fractions, Decimals and Whole Numbers
Quarter 4: Measurement, Geometry
Science
In 5th grade, students will have science instruction every day! This is a big shift from earlier years. Here is a general outline of the year:
Quarter 1: Genetics, Cells, Human Body Systems
Quarter 2: Matter, Energy
Quarter 3: Water Cycle, Weather
Quarter 4: Ecosystems, Force and Motion
