Assistive Technology (AT) on the IEP
Invite Your AT Specialist to the Meeting:
Provide your AT specialist with ample time to prepare for the IEP meeting.
The AT Specialist should work with the IEP team to update the Present Levels, Special Factors, Statewide Assessments, and Services pages for Assistive Technology needs.
Please do not add or remove AT services without an initial or exit assessment by the AT Specialist (unless parent declines offer of AT services).
Present Levels:
Document Student needs that support use of Assistive Technology (AT) on the PRESENT LEVELS page (e.g., Communication section, Adaptive / Daily Living Skills section)
Special Factors:
Thoroughly discuss and complete the SPECIAL FACTORS page.
Does Student Require AT?
If the student already has AT services, make sure to clearly document what they require AT for (e.g., Communication, Reading, Writing, Device Access) and what features they require to be successful (e.g., Text-to-Speech, Enlarged Keyboard, High Contrast).
If the student does not already have AT services, make sure to clearly document the areas of concern (e.g., Communication, Reading, Writing, Device Access) and how it relates to their disability.
Follow up with a referral for an AT assessment with SELPA
Statewide Assessments:
Consider AT needs when discussing accommodations and modifications for statewide assessments
Goals:
Discuss Assistive Technology GOALS, for example:
Operational Goals: How to operate the device (e.g., charging, navigating, volume)
Strategic Goals: Strategies to access the device when needed (e.g., understanding when it’s needed, communication breakdown, writing assignment)
Services - Offer of FAPE
Discuss Accommodations, Modifications and Supplemental Supports on the SERVICES page, and consider examples:
Accommodations: Assistive Technology Device will be accessible to the student in all educational settings
Supplemental Supports: Consultation between Assistive Technology Specialist and School Staff in Education Setting or Remotely (e.g., email, video conference, call)
Discuss SERVICES: Assistive Technology Services - 445
If AT Assessment has been completed and the student is Eligible for AT, be sure Assistive Technology Services 445 are included; provided by SELPA with recommended minutes.
Do not add or remove AT services without an initial or exit assessment by the AT Specialist (unless parent declines offer of AT services).
