Interested in studying abroad during the academic year?
Students who are interested in studying abroad during the academic year start the application process in the fall of their sophomore year. The deadline to apply is January of your sophomore year (specific dates below.)
Here the steps you should take to begin the abroad application process:
1. Attend the Study Abroad Fair in September of your sophomore year.
2. Complete the Advising Questionnaire.
3. Sign up for a Study Abroad 101 session: https://oipstudyabroad101.youcanbook.me/
4. Start researching programs on the Office of Global Education website.
5. Meet with a Program Manager (a staff member of the Office of Global Education) for the region you are interested in. (Some programs require this step!)
6. Meet with a Carroll School staff advisor to discuss how abroad fits into your 4 year plan and learn what classes you can take abroad.

What you need to consider as a Carroll School of Management student
What classes you can take abroad
You will need to complete a Study Abroad Course Evaluation Form for each course you take abroad that you hope will fulfill a requirement at BC. To submit the form, you must include the course details, description, and syllabus. You should seek this approval prior to departure for abroad.
Here are some guidelines to use for the approval process:
There are only three Carroll School core classes that can be approved: Operations Management, Marketing Principles, and Organizational Behavior.
Departments will not approve more than one course towards a concentration. The one exception to this policy is the Management and Leadership concentration: students are able to take two electives abroad towards this concentration.
The Finance Department requires you to seek approval for an elective prior to leaving for abroad. They will not review courses once you have returned. More details for taking a Finance elective abroad can be reviewed here (scroll down to “Study Abroad – Detailed Requirements)
To obtain approval for Cultural Diversity, students should complete this separate Cultural Diversity approval form instead of the Study Abroad Course Evaluation Form.
Courses that will serve as “pure” MCAS electives do not require approval through the Study Abroad Course Evaluation Form. One must be sure, though, that the course in question falls within the domain of arts and sciences. If you have questions about this, email me at grafe@bc.edu to confirm the course is MCAS.
Some courses are pre-approved. See the Office of Global Education website for this list.
Visit the Office of Global Education guidance on academic policies and course approvals here.
When planning for abroad, assume you can only fulfill two degree audit requirements. Sometimes courses you plan on taking abroad are canceled or are no longer offered. Play it safe by assuming you can only get two. (Note: if you take a full course load at your university abroad, you will get 15 credits transferred back towards the 120 credits you need to graduate.)
When to go abroad
Students go abroad either fall or spring of their junior year, with a small group of students who go abroad for an entire year.
Many internships after your junior year will begin June 1st. If you are going abroad in the spring, make sure you are back by late May.
When applying to study abroad, please note Boston College's goal is to have equal abroad enrollment across the fall and spring semester. Students should be prepared to go abroad either semester as the Office of Global Education cannot guarantee a student's first choice program or term. For more information, please speak to the Office of Global Education.
