According to the American Library Association there were nearly 1600 individual book challenges or removals during 2021. This is the highest number of challenges and removals since the ALA began tracking these statistics beginning in 2002. The majority of the books that were challenged were by and/or about those in the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.
