1. Brief description and aims of module:
The module aims to enable sustained engagement with philosophical questions through detailed study of key texts in the history of philosophy. The module will facilitate practice of close textual engagement and thereby improve skills in focused interpretive analysis and criticism. Students will reflect on issues of textual interpretation for understanding central ideas in the philosophical writings of a given thinker or selection of thinkers (in English translation).
Nietzsche is used here as an illustrative example
2.Outline syllabus
Detailed analysis of the core text(s), from specified periods in the history of philosophy will form the central focus of both lecture and seminar engagement. Secondary materials will be engaged where appropriate to facilitate class discussion.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Learning is facilitated by interactive lectures/workshops and student-led seminars. Lectures are used to introduce major schools of thought and associated debates together with overarching themes and necessary contextualisation. Seminars will provide a forum for argument as well as an opportunity for presentations. Your will be expected to do some preparatory reading and thinking following the guidance in the module handbook, to engage actively with lectures and contribute fully to seminars.
