1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores music research in the most practical sense, breaking down preconceptions of how music should be studied. We take bold steps towards a more complete understanding of all musics, through observation, discussion and performing.
The module aims to:
Foster music research through practice
Challenge preconceptions about music research
Develop observation, discussion and performing skills as research processes
2. Outline syllabus
Understanding Music 2B connects with the disciplines of ecomusicology, ethnomusicology and musicology to build practical research solutions in areas such as education, wellbeing and music psychology. Practical methods also enable the study of music cultures for which oral traditions are important.
You develop key skills that focus on practical research methods, exploring the areas of musicological and ethnomusicological study for which a practice-based approach to conducting research is important. You produce a practical research portfolio, inspired from work in areas such as education, wellbeing, psychology or ecomusicology and tailored to your interests through a series of method and fieldwork seminars.
