1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module develops your skills and experience as a creative musician by equipping you with new strategies and approaches for the task of creating music.
This module aims to:
Introduce you to specific methods, drawing on practices in new and current music.
Contextualise your own work within other current creative practices.
Enable you to begin to find your own identity as an artist.
2. Outline syllabus
In preparing you for level 6, this module is project based, and as such the syllabus content is indicative. However, you focus on compositional methods/techniques and group composition practices. This way you develop the scope of your creative practice and experiment with your personal voice as an artist.
Your two creative projects are as follows. In the first, you explore specific methods from wider current practices in music and create work in response/collation to and of these practices. In the second, you explore creative strategies that operate within a group - as part of a small pop or jazz ensemble (for example), or other context where authorship is shared - and produce a work through and of that group.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Each project begins with a series of seminars designed to support your technical, aesthetic and contextual understanding of the work you are making. The seminars present relevant existing work and consider the practical challenges relevant to the topic and explore the skills needed to address them. Individual and/or group tutorials support your work, and you work on your piece with tutor and peer support.
