1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module develops your skills and experience as a performing musician through enhancing your area(s) of specialism within particular repertoires.
The module aims to:
Provide you with the opportunity and explore particular and focussed areas of the repertoire of your voice/instrument.
Develop your in-depth and critical capacity when performing.
Foster your specialist knowledge in a particular historical or stylistic area of music making.
2. Outline syllabus
You choose from a variety of specialist options at the outset of the course and use the associated sessions to obtain detailed information about the performance practice(s) of key repertoire areas. Indicative options include the music of differing historical eras (for example, pertaining to histories of classical, popular, or jazz), or particular stylistic traditions (for example, swing, funk, avant-garde, or opera).
You will complete two projects, allowing you to demonstrate the presentational and critical skills you have learned as part of the module. The first project requires you to demonstrate knowledge of your chosen specialism, the second allows you to practically showcase the levels of critical understanding you have attained.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Classes are composed of a series of large group lectures and practical workshops that allow exploration and discussion of the specialist repertoires that you have chosen to explore. Classes contextualise the core elements of these repertoires whilst instrumental lessons provide you with a space to activate the particulars of these skills within the context of your own instrument/voice.
