2. Outline syllabus
The syllabus for this module looks at theories for change, e.g. systems theories, organisational change theory, and theory of change, and you will consider the application of these theories in the context of quality and improvement in health and social care provision.
You will build on your knowledge of current organisation of health and social care in the UK in response to the current economy, government policy and legislation. You will bring your knowledge and understanding from previous modules into these topics, e.g. the connections between financial compliance and due diligence that are made with the workforce, with standards connected with health and safety at work, occupational guidance and factors that influence the health and social care environment and determine whether a service is improving or failing.
Taking a leadership perspective the module reviews leading and managing change. Through the lectures and discussions you will examine the impact of change on roles within health and social care. Areas of legislation, practice and policy are studied alongside the necessary knowledge, and skills required to perform in a changing environment to ensure organisational compliance whilst working to improve quality of delivery. You will learn about some of the leading reform and debate about standards in care in regard to change and quality improvement e.g. the work of the Kings Fund, the Centre for Welfare Reform and consider the role of the Care Quality Commission and local Authority contracting and monitoring. Processes for monitoring, reviewing and auditing are also discussed.
There will be a review of strategy. Services need good strategies and planning in place to operate, market, be compliant, up-skill the workforce and more. You will be introduced to how technology and marketing are influencing factors in health and social care management. The use of social media and online ‘market place’ systems, e.g. community catalogues and dynamic purchasing systems set up by local authorities for the third sector, will be evaluated in terms of their design for services to promote their activities and provision.
In preparation for level 6 modules discussions about change and improving services will include a focus on current literature and perspectives of influencers and national campaigning organisations that are informing policy and national debate.
